So we had a nice fire drill on Monday. Some jerk 2 floors down burned a bagel and the whole building had to be evacuated. Fire department showed up, cleared the offending bagel from the toaster and gave the all clear.

I was in a meeting down the hall and I started smelling smoke again today. This time it was coming through the HVAC vents. It smells like another bagel or something that burned. I wish these people would just eat at home or eat on the way to work. They should get their pay docked for doing this crap. I know fire calls aren't free. I hope whoever was responsible Monday gets the bill for being stupid.

Break from work on Monday due to fire sounds good to me.

Why are you so bitter. People make mistakes, it was an accident.

I instituted a rule at my shops is all cooking must be attented 100 percent of the time including popcorn. Smell of burnt popcorn or fish made the shop caustic. Had a guy who was dominican who brought and reheated fish twice a week. Jesus Hume....

Heating up popcorn or fish in a workplace needs to be punishable by a flogging.

Same thing happened at my work, coworker put a burger patty in the toaster oven. Automatically the fire department comes when the alarm goes off

Agreed. Thankfully where I work now it seems everyone grabs their lunch from the food court or somewhere like that. Back in my old office it was a nightmare since I was right by the kitchen. Hated it.

I sit next to one of the two microwaves in my office and at least 3 times a week someone makes popcorn in it and about 4 times a week people reheat gross stuff in it.

I hate microwaves.

Eh, it happens. If it's a weekly occurrence, THEN I can see instituting some rules, but if someone messes up once a year, big deal.

It happens in our kitchenette occasionally, but it's not that bad considering there's about a hundred people using it.

Once I brought in chicken curry for lunch, and decided I would just eat it cold rather than heat it up and make myself the star of an office legend. I opened the tupperware at my cube and the smell was so powerful I decided to eat it in my car. About five minutes after I returned, my co-worker goes "Holy cow, are you eating something with curry?"

I more-so hate the (usually obese) people who decide to microwave something a normal person would consider lunch or dinner at 8:30AM (ie, FUCKING CHICKEN WINGS). Why god? WHY? I would welcome the smell of a burnt bagel around here.

Just another day in the office I suppose.

Some guy microwaved a half pound of bacon to make BLTs. The delicious smell of bacon hung around the office for over an hour.

Personally I feel that if it is in the cafeteria (aka a designated food prep and eating area), it is fair game.

If your office does not have a cafeteria, and food smell will make it into the work area, then show some courtesy.

What's bad is that most vending machines are maintained by vending machine companies, instead of the office they are in. I've seen quite a few that have microwave popcorn as a cheap snack... (volume vs price)

On my floor, we have a break room that my group uses. A few people eat freezer meals at lunch. I can usually smell whatever they cook...be it the asian cuisine or the brocoli alfredo sauce... It goes in the vents as well... *(which makes me think it may be someone in my group or at least on my floor responsible for this incident)

Luckily, I have enough money or time to eat at home or in a restaurant every day. I don't have to resort to brown bagging it or eating that freezer crap.

It makes my wife angry when I fry bacon at home... I don't think I'd mind if it were a bacon smell going around the office as much....just as long as it's not bacon smoke.

Proud of it and I continue the tradition

I remember that thread :p
Do you still run Netware though? I'm certified in 5 and 6! Sad to see how that company has been split apart. I always though Jack Messman was a great CEO....especially because he looked a little like Rip Torn:
