People complaining about Gmail on Android getting hacked

Hey guys,

I just purchased a touchscreen phone that runs Android 2.2, it will be my first foray into the smartphone arena! Very excited. However, in doing some research, I came across this thread over in the Google forums:

Take a look. Apparently, a bunch of users are complaining about getting their gmail accounts hacked. Some are even claiming it's due to a security flaw with the OS, having never had an issue until they started using an Android phone!

So my first question is:

Are these people just morons? Is it just a coincidence? And\or did they download a trojan app that got hold of their gmail login\pw because they weren't careful?

My next question is, is it safe to access your gmail account via a public WiFi hotspot, if you're using HTTPS? Or is that still not a good idea even thru HTTPS, since someone could be sniffing\keylogging the network?

Use a strong password for your gmail account and you'll be fine.

I've never had an issue.

It's probably best to download the Gmail app from the Android market, but even then the default Android e-mail interface is secure/reliable enough.

shrug. I got my gmail hacked the other day. It auto sent spam mail out which got blocked. I changed my pwd and this was gone. I can't find the source though. Brute force? Possible, but I have a gibberish + numbers password. So I don't know.
