So, first off the setup.

I live in an apartment complex that has a swimming pool. It just so happens that my apartment is the closest apartment to the swimming pool. Each apartment in the complex has a key to the pool.

Well, people would constantly ask us for the pool key. At first, I didn't mind so much, however, people started just taking the key without asking. This is where we have issue. People got to the point where they really were not asking if they could borrow something that wasn't theirs, they were taking it.

Now, mind you, if we lose a key each member of the apartment has to pay $100 to replace the lock and get keys for each apartment in the complex.

Now that you have the setup, here is what happened.

A guy knocks on the door, looks for the key where it used to be and even goes so far as to touch the hook that it was formerly hanging on. He say's "Hey, could I borrow your pool key?" My response was this, (and no, I didn't have any sort of sarcastic or degrading tone) "I'm sorry, we aren't giving out our pool key anymore. We've had too many people asking for it very frequently. Some have even taken it without asking. I'm sure you can understand how annoying this would be"

Well, the guy went crazy. I mean, he seriously started throwing a tantrum because he didn't get what he wanted. He slammed to door very loudly, marched away to get a key from someone else (the next apartment down) and opened the pool door to, I guess, grab something out of it, and then slammed the pool door.

He then proceeded to open our door and chuck a newspaper at me screaming"You FoRGoT YoUr MAIL!"

Am I insane? I mean seriously, all that I did was tell this guy no as politely as possible. Do people always go ape shit insane whenever they get told no?

You = Fail

Should've told the guy the key was lost and you didn't have money for a replacement.

you should take his laundry out of the washer. that'll teach him. Or leave bike skid marks in front of his door.

If someone threw a newspaper at me for a reason like that, he'd be regretting ever knocking on my door. Fuck self entitled pricks like that. I wouldn't even think to ask someone else for their key. I'd walk my ass back to the apartment, and get my own.

Holy shit. If someone opened my door and threw something in I'd kick the crap out of them.

:) My roommates were all home at the time. After he chucked the newspaper at me, my roommate ran out after him yelled "Hey, come back here!". I'm pretty sure that he would have fought the guy. Myself, I would have let it drop.

Well, all of the roommates were home and it is a pretty safe place to live. Something like this just hasn't happened before. Either way, he would still went insane as we would have answered the door had he knocked.

I don't have an issue with leaving doors unlocked; I do it all the time. I find it highly unusual that neighbors would walk in and take your stuff without asking. What the hell kind of commune do you live in?

College apartments. Yes, the taking of the keys without asking was the WTF that caused us to move them out of sight and set the "No keys to anyone" policy.

You live in an apartment, aka, trailers for cities that have enough room only to pile their garbage high, not wide. Move into a less squalid domicile to find people of greater mental health.

The strong prey on the weak. Get a shotgun and blow the next motherf*cker away who walks through your door uninvited.

Also, check out TFNN.com. It's a laugh a minute.

This. People don't come inside another's house here uninvited. It's a good way to get shot.

your post wins this thread.

OP, you handled it wrong. Every apartment gets its own pool key? Everyone should be bringing their own key ffs.
Should've said you misplaced yours or one of the many who "borrowed" it might've lifted it.

I guess I handled it how I would like to have been treated. I myself would have rather had someone give me the reasons for a no rather than lie to my face. At very least, he isn't going to ask us again.

sometimes you have to diffuse the bomb before it goes off. my answer would've left no room for his temper tantrum, and yet threw a big hint that you didn't like people borrowing your key.

:) True. I just honestly never thought someone would throw a temper tantrum because they got told they couldn't have something that wasn't theirs. I didn't even see that there was a possibility for a bomb.
