People are buying more Accords than Civics?

"Honda Accord and Civic ranked as the second and fourth best selling passenger cars in America. "

What does this mean about the American consumer?

It means that the average American consumer HAS A FAMILY and families need midsize cars, not compacts. Auto sales are ALWAYS dominated by midsize cars like the Accord, Camry, Taurus, etc.

That the average consumer wants a reliable car with good gas mileage.

That the average consumer would like to step on the gas and actually go somewhere?

Everyone above me is wrong.

It means the average American consumer is now fat and feels uncomfortable in a small car.

I wanted leather seats, a V6, and an adult car. I bought an Accord EX coupe. I can afford it, and I'm happy with it.

I've driven my roommate's Civic LX. It's not as comfortable, it doesn't perform as well, and I don't feel as safe on the highway with it. It's not the same at all. To be fair, his gas mileage decimates my V6. As I said, it's not the same at all.

I owned a crappy Chevy truck before the Accord. I do kind of miss it, and I'll probably buy a Tacoma (or whatever is equivalent at that time) after I put 350K on the Accord and it finally dies.

They're basically the same price anyway. If I were an average american and I saw the Civic and the Accord only a couple thousand bucks apart, I would spring for the Accord.

iirc, the accord has outsold the civic forever.

over the past ~20 years the #1 selling car has been either a taurus, a camry, or an accord.

It's because the Civic is so overpriced it's laughable. Why buy a little sh!tbox when you can get the big daddy for a few more dollars?

bcoz size is everything? for a lot of people handling is more important than lugging capacity, and having a smaller, lighter car is more fun to drive

Accord is larger, and faster for the same price, comparing them together as highest Civic to lowest Accord.

To make a long story short

Invoice on an Accord is in the 18's

MSRP on a Civic is in the 17-18's.

The money you save in gas by buying a civic is spent on $2000 in dealer markup. Therefore, you can buy a civic and save $2000 on gas over 100,000 miles but spend $2000 more than you should on the car due to dealer markup, or you can buy an accord for invoice.

is road noise an issue w/the newest model of civics? back at the turn of the century (circa yr 2000), i rode in a civic and those were pretty noisy on the highways, compared to an accord and camry.

The Accord has always done better than the Civic in the U.S.

Up here in Canada, oddly, the Civic does better than the Accord. I think we tend to have less disposable income.

Because they are not mutually exclusive!

New cars are grouped into one category, and used cars are a different category. If you are buying a new car, jumping from a Civic to an Accord is only slightly more in the monthly payment. So slight that it doesn't matter. Insurance is also the same.

Well remember in America we like big@$$ cars. If you have an Accord or Camry in Taiwan, you're driving a monster. Everyone has small cars like Corollas or Civics. Then again Honda sells like CRAP in Taiwan simply because they don't have a plant there. It might not have to do with income, but also traffic patterns.

Who the hell wants to ride in a Civic anyways? Packing 4 people in there is quite squished, and not to mention squeezing 5 in. The leg room is just insufficient in the back. The Accord and all other midsize vehicles solves this problem...

if you think about it, the accord makes more sense... better interior, bigger engine, more space, all for $3,4k more.

Like everyone else said, $3k more for an accord (comparing equal trims on a civic to accord) is more than worth it.

now the jazz... i have no idea. it costs almost the same as the civic, yet people pay MSRP or above for it because of the hype... i'd take a civic over a jazz any day.

Taiwan is an odd place. It's not that Honda is not well loved or respected or whatever, it's just not as available... unlike Ford, for instance. Lots of Ford Festivas!

If I was in Taiwan, I wouldn't drive an Accord or Camry because it'd be too hard to get around in alleys, to park, etc. The cool thing about the small cars there, though, is that you can get them with the full package. That is, most cars come with leather seats. My cousin bought her Corolla a couple of years ago with full leather, mahogany trim, power everything, etc. I'm not sure if it's the dealers who are installing all that or if they just get different packages from the manufacturer.

They're also not driving as fast as the Americans (even on the highways) or going as far, and that makes a big difference. You can drive the entire length of Taiwan in six hours! When I tell my family I'm driving four hours to see my sister in Arizona, they think I'm driving to the other side of the country.

Not really, more like $1k more due to absurd civic markup.
