Pentuim 4's overheating in laptops?

techs

Lifer
Anyone else who fixes computers, or owns a P4 laptop having problems with it overheating and shutting down?
For sure 2 of the lappys were using a desktop p4 in a laptop(whats with that anyway?) but I have now seen it with 2 laptops labeled P4 M.
Is there any recourse for the buyers?
Thanks

Doesn't surprize me, that's why I never recommend anything in Intel except for the Pentium M (Dothan).

Perhaps the cooling fan has stopped or slowed down on these systems?

Toshiba has this listed as a known flaw for a lot of their older P4-m laptops and I believe their solution is to get a can of compressed air and clean all the dust out of the vents, intakes. Those processors run WAY too hot imho, should have never been used in laptops.

If that doesn't help enough, you may have to disassemble the laptop and remove the heatsink and give it a good cleaning. Reseat it with some high quality thermal grease. Laptops are well known for heat related issues due to dirty/malfunctioning heatsinks and fans.

Actually this last one I was able to open the case and it had a small amount of dust within the hsf fins. It looked like nothing, but I blew it out and BINGO it has run for 7 hours without shutting down. Before it shut down within 20 minutes every time.
And the really good news (for me) is I was given it and now I have a working lappy that runs fast.
Neat.

Laptops will heat up more simply because of the tighter space and less cooling. P4's are probably the hottest CPU on the market, and I'm not talking about sales 😛

With 2 P4 desktops, I had a room fan and my window open, in the dead of winter with snow falling. They are that hot. At work, we had lots of graveyard laptops that had P4's. PM or Turion is the way to go, P4's just aren't designed for laptops.
