Pentium4 Temperature Question...

I'm running on a 2.26 ghz P4 on the 533 mhz FSB, and I'm a little concerned that my CPU temperature could be higher than normal. Specifically, I think I may have applied too much thermal grease, so I'm wondering what temperature people are attaining while using Intel's stock heat sink fans.

My CPU is running at about 111 F, or 44 C, not overclocked in any way. I recently added this heat sink fan, and the temperature did not change in the slightest, reinforcing my theory that my excessive thermal grease is inhibiting the heat sink fan. This is all speculation from a relative computer newbie, however, so I thought that getting some feedback before cracking open my PC would be prudent.

Lastly, if I did indeed apply too much thermal grease, how would I go about cleaning my processor so as to apply a more reasonable amount?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Here's what you do.
[start lecture]
Use alcohol to get all of the heatsink grease off, go on over to new egg and get some arctic silver 3 if you're so inclined or continue to use your current paste.

Then use a credit card to gently ease a drop or two of thermal paste in a very thin layer over the whole CPU. When you get done, it should be no more than a quarter of a millimeter in thickness.

You see, while thermal paste helps to eleminate gaps between the heatsink and the CPU (Air has a *very* low heat conductance.) heatsink compound is still 100 times less effective at transfering heat than even iron. And Iron is a veyr poor conductor of heat in the heatsink world.

The less of this stuff this heat has to go through, the faster it can get to the metal of the heatsink and out into the air. Get it? :D

Many thanks. Does that mean I have some headroom to do nasty, warrenty-voiding things like overclocking...?
