But they (Intel) haven't targeted the mainstream market. That is the problem here, which glossing over and saying, "yeah, but what-if?" will not help. EDIT: If they do, then revisiting the price/performance comparison between the different processors will be warranted.
There's no point in putting information on performance in this post, because most people desire a combination of price and performance. As well as the fact that in general one can manipulate both the testing methodology and the resulting statistics to get the desired conclusion. Or, put results not in context.
