Pentium or K6-2???

I found a couple of components to build myself a server. I have the choice of using either a Pentium 200/MMX or a K6-2 266. I will probably overclock it as well. Any suggestions on which one I should use? 😕

The K6 family is generally a speed grade faster in software not intimately tied to the processor's floating-point unit. A K6-200 is somewhat like a P233MMX in this respect. So, a K6-2-266 might be much like a 300MHz Pentium MMX, if such a thing existed in the desktop world.

The K6-2-266 also happens to be on a quarter micron process, while the P55c (Pentium MMX) is on a 350nm process. The K6-2-266 can probably be overclocked (though I don't know why you'd want to do this for a server), just as well compared proportionately to the P55c in question, so the max perf of that K6-2 should be well above the max perf of the P55c.

Additionally, I *think* that the 250nm K6-2-266 consumes less power (generates less heat) than the 350nm P55c-200. Don't take my word for that, though.

Just to add to the above ,the Pentiums FPU is about 20-25% better than the K6-2 (unless 3Dnow is being used) ,so I guess it comes down to what a server needs more ,FPU performance or Integer? (don't ask me I don't know!😱😉).
I also agree that a K6-2 will use less power than a Pentium ,but does that really matter? ,it's only going to make a small difference to total power useage.

BTW are you sure that the m/brd supports the lower cpu voltages for the K6-2?

First, for what that server will be built for ? When it only shares disc space over 10Mbit ethernet or sth, 486/100Mhz is more than enough for that. IMHO K6-2/266 is a bit faster and more overclockable than P55C but I wouldn't overclock server anyway. BTW soft-RAID runs much faster with 3DNow under linux 🙂

Well, these are just parts that I came across. Thanks for all the replies, and yes the motherboard supports the voltages for the K6-2, and I have yet to decide what to make of the server. I was thinking of either a game server and/or haveit splitan internet conection on a 100bit network using sygate or something.
