Pentium M vs. Pentium 4

I am really out of the laptop loop, but i was wondering what the benefits of the Pentium M are over the regular Pentium 4's. Which one is suppose to be better? More bang for the buck? Are there some intangible factors that make it hard to judge, or is it pretty straight forward one way or another.

Ok PM 1.6 = P4 2.4....

Advts of PM:
1) More battery life (at least an hour more)
2) Usually the laptop is thinner n lighter
3) cooler CPU

Advts of P4:
1) More powerful than PM (if u purchase one > 2.4 GHZ that is)
2) Usually for power users...so its usually bundled wif more advanced graphics card etc..
...but i'm sucks battery life dry in no time

I guess if ur going for light n portable, go for PM...
If u wanna desktop replacement, go for P4...
By saying that, I'm not degrading the PM CPU power at all!!

I personally would go for PM. Afterall, the point of a portable PC is so u can port it around, isn't it?

More or less...

Mobile P4 - Higher clock speeds, bigger/heaver laptops, shorter battery life (basically a desktop chip)
mobile P4M - older true mobile chip (less power hungry, highest clock speed is 2.6ghz)
PM- newest mobile chip, great battery life, smaller/lighter laptops, lower clock speeds but same performance as higher clocked p4m, more expensive

Actually I'd like to correct you a little here

The current Intel chips available in laptops are:

Pentium 4 - Exactly the same as a desktop CPU, no SpeedStep, used in Desktop replacements, or before the P4m came out, up to 2.8GHz
Pentium 4m - Mobile version of the P4, has SpeedStep, uses slightly less power, in more higher-speed laptops, up to 2.6GHz
Pentium-M - aka Banais, Centrino - new, improved architecture, in the "thin and light" category, up to 1.7GHz

Basically the P4(m) are the same thing, but the m has speedstep

Actually, I believe you are mistaken... Intel offers a Mobile P4 as well as a P4M. The Mobile P4 is not exactly the same as the desktop processor (but close) and it goes up to 3.06ghz. And it does have speedstep. The P4-M goes up to 2.6ghz.

Wah is correct - there is a confusing array of Pentium 4 choices for notebooks.

Pentium 4 - desktop processor pressed into notebook service

Mobile Pentium 4 - essentially the same as the Pentium 4-M it replaces, except for higher clock speeds and bus frequencies. The higher clocks and buses are needed to push the Pentium 4 core's performance above the Pentium-M because the Pentium-M does much more in a clock cycle than a Pentium 4. This CPU is meant for the highest performing desktop replacement machines.

Pentium 4-M - has speed step technology. The Pentium-M is intended to replace the Pentium 4-M in thin and light notebooks.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but the last time I heard, you couldn't install linux on a Pentium-M based system. It's a big deal for some, and not so much for others.
