I need a very basic laptop to take with me on my business trips. I have been looking at basic Hp laptops and am wondering: Is there a performance gap between Pentium M and Celeron M? I know the new Pentium M has a 533 FSB but they cost too much for me. I ahev narrowed it down to 2

I am comparing between a Celerom M 370
1.5GHz
400MHz FSB
1MB L2 Cache

and a Pentium M 715A
1.5GHz
400MHz FSB
2MB L2 Cache

Do the two have any performance differences? I know most program don't utlize 2MB L2 so is there a significant performance increase if I go for the PM? (BTW it costs $100 more)
Thanks

they should preform about the same, if i remember right the celeron m does not have the advanced speed step tech(power saving) that the pm has. and possibly the latency of the caches are different too

No, they will not perfrom the same.. Speed Step unit is also different. Centrino also uses SLIGHTLY less power as well.

The 2MB of cache will definitely help you out. Centrino chipsets are definitely worth $100 over a mobile celeron.

You do realize that a Celeron M is a pentium M based celeron, and not a mobile p4 based celeron right? But yeah, the 2mb cache will make some differance, and the celeron m won't have the speedstep capablilities, so it won't be quite as good on batter life, but over all they will perform fairly similar in most things.

The new Celeron Ms with 1mb L2 cache are actually FASTER than the old Pentium Ms with 1mb L2 cache since they have the dothan core improvements over the banias.

The Celeron M both old and new verisons are fast. They dont deserve the "Celeron" name.
