Intel is cutting prices on Pentium M chips 13 to 33% on Oct 5 link

I don't usually follow laptops but I need a newer one for school, is it like desktop chips where the prices will fall b4 the acutal price cut? When do you think think we will see the price change, if at all?

Taiwanese notebook makers have confirmed October price cuts on Intel?s Pentium M and mobile portability processors that were reported earlier.

Intel expects to cut prices for Pentium M processors by 13-33% on October 5, when it will also phase out the 1.3GHz Pentium M CPU, sources said.

Prices for Intel?s portability processors are also expected to be cut in October, with mobile Pentium 4 processors to fall in price by 14-35% on October 26, sources said.

The price cuts are expected to boost sales of Intel?s processors as the PC market transitions into the peak season, according to sources. According to estimates by local notebook makers, global notebook sales are expected to reach a historic high of 10 million units in the fourth quarter.

WTF? Phasing out the 1.3? Noes!

I wanted to build a desktop Centrino, and that would have put it in the "affordable in a half-chance in hell" category. Stupid Intel. Ruin my fun, will you? :|

ER the 1.4 will now cost the same as the 1.3 costs now.

yeah but I think he was looking for cheaper, ie lower the cost of the 1.3. As it is now, you get a 'free' step up to the next level with this price scheme, but the cheapest PM still costs the same as the cheapest PM before. Some people want to get their hands on a cheap PM to make a nice quiet home built system.

screw it I just went ahead and ordered, the lapop i'm getting is 1.4 and it only dropped $32. Plus i got the thinkpad X31 which doesn't have a socketed cpu so I bet it doesn't really drop in price. Free extra battery and the release of the 802.11 a/b/g mini pci card clinched the deal

What kind of CPU does the X31 have?

Pentium M 1.4gHz, from anandtech review:

Unlike the CPUs found in the thin and light systems we looked at in our Centrino roundup, the Pentium M processor in the IBM X31 is not socketed. Instead the CPU is mounted directly on the system's motherboard. This is most likely in order to save space and frankly does not bother us in the least bit: it would be very difficult to upgrade the processor in the X31 even if it were socketed (due to the fact it is hard to get to and getting your hands on a single socketed Pentium M processor would be extremely difficult). Note that the CPU makes contact with the heatsink surface with the help of some thermal grease.
