i have a 566 celeron running at 850 right now. i am thinking about upgrading to a 800 PIII. how much of an improvement will i notice??? also should i buy a slot 1 or a fcpga? what is the EB i see after some of the processors? should i buy it box or bulk? also what do you suggest for a heatsink and fan, i was thinking the Ultra PEP66 with 38cfm fan, is this a good pick, anything better? and i should definitely go with the 100fsb instead of the 133 right? i want to overclock this processor what kind of speeds am i looking at, over a gig?

i'll answer the ones i know ;)
you may want to look at a PIII 700E instead, they seem to overclock better
personally i'd go for an fcpga, because that way you get to use something like a CUSL2 for overclocking, and i know for a fact that all socket370 PIII's have on-die L2 cache, as for the slot 1's, i'm not sure. the EB after the processor indicates the following: E = Coppermine core. B = runs on a 133mhz fsb
now as for buying box or bulk, box can be better, because you have the extra heatsink that comes with it(for video card cooling, etc. ;)) and if you're buying to overclock(which it appears you are) it is sometimes suspected that when you buy OEM(bulk) cpu's, the vendor may have checked all of the chips for the ones that overclock well and sell you the crap. as for heatsink, i'd go with a g'orb juse because of how they look(and the cooling isn't quite as necessary for PIII's as it is the amd chips because they produce much less heat) but take a look at 2cool's if you want to see the best the cooling marked has to offer IMHO

good luck :)

A P3 700 on an MSI Slotket is my setup and I'm loving every minutre of it. Retail cpus are better overall, as said you get an extra heatsink and the retail ones are just made with better materials than the oems so they usually overclock better. I have that same heatsink you are lookign at also. The 38 cfm fan is getting so darn annoying that I am about to buy a new fan(less noise) to keep my sanity. The YS Tech fan is much less noisier and performs just a degree or two worse than the Delta 38 cfm. P3 700 will overclock better because of multipliers and stuff and you are basically guaranteed 933+. I have mine at 1.1 ghz!

A P3 650 or 700 mhz stepping cb0 or higher are probably the best. Dont count on breaking 1ghz with those 2 chips but 910-933 mhz are more realistic. Just bought a p3 650mhz cb0 last weekend for 152 bucks. With be6-2, it run at 923 mhz (142 mhz x 6.5 @1.7 volts) stable. Cannot go higher due to memory.

Hammbone,
I saw an artcle on Tomshardware.com and it looks like a celernon 566@850 performs about the same as PIII 667 or PIII 700(both of the PIII's at default speed). I agree with the other person about the Delta 38 cfm fan. Way too noisy. YS-tech is good alternative. Material or production wise, there is no difference between OEM or retail CPU's. It's just a matter of what product codes Intel stamps on the chips. As already mentioned the retail CPU's come with a HSF and the retail chips have 3 year warranty while OEM CPU's have little or no warranty. I would probably recommend the PIII 700. A guy on this board named Compuwiz1 sells these CPU's pre-tested at 933(and maybe even higher now) and only charges a slight premium over buying the chip yourself and taking your chances.

Yeah, P3 700's are great. I've been running mine at 1ghz for a months and it works fine. I've also been able to take it over 1.1ghz, w/a 72w pelt, PEP66 and 38cfm Delta fan, but the noise from that fan gets really annoying after awhile(do not get one), so I have been using a gorb for now.

There is nothing more irritating to me, than people who may have gotten lucky a time or two spreading untruths!

Syborg1211 I'm calling you out on this one. Please explain then, the 7 700E PIII retail boxed I dumped here on the forums because they would not dance at 933 at even extreme voltage. :Q

It is not a lock! I test boatloads of cpus.

I had a celeron2-566@952 and a p3-850. I pulled the celeron out and popped in the p3. The pentium was noticably faster. Add to that the fact that I was able to crank the p3 up to 1.13ghz...

Edit: and I would agree with Compuwiz, there is no guarantee on any cpu. Even if there is a 90+% chance, you may wind up in that 10%.

If you already have a Celeron at 850MHz the upgrade is not worth it. The PIII 850 plus cooler will cost at least $250, and you have no guarantee it will overclock at all. Look at the Content Creation benchmarks on this web site, even the scores for a PIII 1GHz or Athlon are only about 10% better than the Celeron. Save your cash for the next round of technology. R.

Here is what I experienced. I got this very chip and it would NOT hit anything above 840! On any voltage under 1.9! So I burned it in at 1.85 for a while and every week or day or so I would raise the fsb and it would go up. Many of you dont believe in the burn-in technique, but I have experienced it for myself!
