Pentium III 450/ 500/ 550/ 600 MHz ?

My BX motherboard supports these processors:

I want to get a P3 but I don't want to spend a lot of money. Which one would you recommend me ?

Are you planning to overclock? Just go with a cheap 500E if you dont want to spend that much.

This motherboard doesn't let you change the FSB speed, so I guess I won't be overclocking.

What is the price difference between the PIII 500e and the PIII 600 ?

About $40-50. You can also consider buying a Celeron 566 and clock it at 100MHz(850MHz), so it will outperform even 600E, and its the cheapest solution. You might need a slocket in order to set it at 100MHz though, and even that, Im not sure if the Intel board will accept it.

I say...
Spend a little on a good MB that will allow you to have control over YOUR OWN HARDWARE! It's your hardware, you should be able to do with it as you wish.
Then I'd say, get at least the 550E. 600E's may be running about the same, or a little more. Get as much as you can afford.

I doubt it.

According to Intel, this motherboard supports Celerons 266, 300, 300A, 333, 366, 400 and 433 MHz.

btw, I currently have a celeron 400 which is on a slotket.

the problem is that a new motherboard means new Video card and new Sound Card. [ This motherboard has onboard audio and video ]

What motherboard would you recommend me anyway?

Get a Celeron 533/566 and a Slotket that lets you set the voltage and FSB.

Man, what a dilemma :Q
You want top performance on a board that ONLY offers you a 100MHz or 66MHz FSB.

Let's start where you're at now...
You've got a PPGA 400, that may or may not go 600MHz on your MB. If your sloket has core voltage adjustments, you could try and jack that 400 up on a 100MHz FSB.
1. Does your sloket support coppermines & voltage adjustments? Reguardless of how you upgrade, a GOOD sloket would be money well spent. You can get an Asus for about $15, I think.
2. Do you have great cooling on it? A GOOD heatsink/fan combo would also be money well spent. You can always sell it or move it over to another CPU. I think you can pick up one of those Golden Orb things for about $15.
3. Basically, with a GOOD sloket and a GOOD heatsink/fan combo, your 400 will either do the 600 or it won't. But for an outlay of about $30, you've got a GOOD base to start from. I'd say try and push that 400 as far as you can. And save up more cash for a MB, Video card, Sound card. Plan now, for the long haul.

I wouldn't monkey around with Celeron II's, slotkets, fancy shmancy heatsinks and fans, and the hope of overclocking such a combo to 850. It might work, but it might not, and it might seem to work but give you annoying occasional instabilities. That Intel board itself is a rock solid one - just get a P3 Coppermine 600E, which your board appears to support, and which will cost you only a little more than a Cele. Duckers, first make sure your motherboard supports Coppermine processors before you go out and get a 600E or something like that. 🙂 If you can't get a Coppermine and can't overclock, then I'd suggest the PIII 600 non-Coppermine if it isn't a lot more expensive then a PIII 550.
