I have a Gateway G6-350(pentium II). I want to upgrade my processor to a pentium III 700 to 800. I was told by gateway tech support my board may be able to support a pentium III 550mhz. An good reason why I cant go higher as long as FSB is 100mhz?

Its a newbie question please help, advice.
still to scared to change my board

Hello Dicktinsay:
My experience with Gateway motherboards is they are NOT so upgradeable. To verify this, you need to find the motherboard identifier number on your board and reference it at Gateway.. It should list the latest BIOS and the upgrade options.

The reason why they suggest P3 550 as a maximum is because Pentium IIIs above 600MHz are Coppermines....they have a much lower voltage and require a BIOS update to be supported properly. Pentium IIIs up to 550 and 600 had very similar characteristics in terms of voltage and design to the Pentium II.
