Pentium G3258: Will production END soon after 20th anniversary?

Intel admits majority of Celeron, Pentium, and some Core i3 sales were taken away and stolen to the unlocked Pentium G3258 20th anniversary model. At up to 4.40 GHz overclocked max on stock voltage, it's the fastest and strongest single-thread speed Intel processor after i7-4790K.

But good things have to come at the end. Eventually, production has to end soon after Pentium's 20th year, so resale-value should easily improve to $99 once they're difficult to come by as new.

What do you think?

I also doubt it stole many i3 sales. Even OC'd, the i3 won most gaming benchmarks. And mom's-facebook-PC builds got the locked Pentium/Celerons, they're cheaper.

I think they sold a crapton of them, yeah, but mostly to nerds that bought 3-4 for playing.

Or, given the OP, maybe some people bought a bunch thinking they could resell them later at a profit...

I bought like three new boxes already for $45 each sale, and I'm very anxious to sell each for $99 shipped after production ended (maybe 2016). Should be soon...

Sounds kind of... "hopeful"?

Maybe you can tell me how to unload my NIB Q6600 for more than I paid for it?

Q6600 was a low-end Core 2 Quad model and depreciation hits the hardest. The important rule is to always buy the highest-end and fastest processor model you can find at a sale price. Pentium G3470 ($45), G3258 ($45), and Core i3-4170 ($79) are great examples, all sale prices offered by Fry's Electronics from time to time. Three years later, probably near the same price you paid, while the cheapest, lowest-end models, like Pentium G3220, has dropped down to $20.

Another bad example is FX-4100 launched in 2011. Originally priced at $149.99, now it's only $45 shipped on eBay.

The gamble on that computer related mass produced items will raise in price over the years is...out of this world.

Yeah, seems pretty stupid to me. But I guess if it pays off once, you might mistakenly think you're smarter than you are lucky.

If you're into gambling, try day trading or lotto.

And then coming in here for validation...?

Intel won't release any unlocked dual core chip anymore. They will sell locked crap and you will be forced to pay premium to unlock the potential.

Who wants an unlocked dual core anyway? They are rubbish for modern 2015 gaming and you don't need to overclock an office box.

I don't get the the obsession with the G3258 either. These aren't bargain basement C2Ds of 2006 that outrun $1000 flagships when OCed.

Just because you can change a multiplier easily doesn't mean the chip is any good from a value perspective. Intel's free lunch is long over.

Okay, first, why the hate on C2Q. I have a C2Q that, to this day, can trade punches with most modern machines. Put a decent graphics card in that beast and watch it kick ass.

Second, I didn't purchase a G3258, I did however, purchase a G2048 before the G3258 had widespread commercial availability. Don't underestimate those dual core chips. They may be a bit slower, but they are excellent gaming CPUs. I'm happy with my mini-itx setup. Had a lan party with a dozen people about a year ago, and it kept up with everyone else (let a friend that flew in from germany use it).

It'll probably hold value well until 2018, when the Celeron 20th anniversary parts come out. Overclockable Braswell, anyone? :D

The G3258 is kind of like a Ford Fiesta with a turbocharger. Not that powerful, but fun for a daily-driver. And not too expensive; arguably, its best attribute.

Does anyone here own a Pentium G3258 that is made in Malaysia or Vietnam instead of Costa Rica? All the G3258s I've seen so far are made in Costa Rica, which are actually old inventory produced on spring 2014.

Intel's Costa Rica plant was already closed on April 2014, and the last ones produced before closure were Pentium G3258.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/09/us-intel-costa-rica-idUSBREA371TJ20140409

Does this mean all the G3258s out here were made in 2014, and Intel had been storing them in warehouse 12 months ago based on one-year supply? If true, looks like this model is discontinued already, and supply is drying up by now.

But I need to know if you see one that was made in Malaysia or Vietnam, which are second batch from late-2014. If so, then production has not ended yet.

Intel issues PCNs (product change notifications) to their distributors and OEMs. Then they issue EOLs, when they are fully discontinuing them.

The most recently-leaked PCN/EOL list I've seen, did NOT indicate that they are discontinuing the G3258.

Edit: Btw, Intel's Costa Rica facility was not a fab, but rather a packaging plant.

once it starts getting harder to get 1150 boards I don't see the g3258 holding value well

someone tell VirtualLarry so that he can stock up a few extra in case. I'm personally a little concerned my CPU will stop working if I don't have one of these taped to my case, albeit not plugged in to the motherboard or anything, but simply for good luck and to make sure that the cycles are kind to the Son of Flynn.

I'm waiting for Newegg to either have a big sale on some semi-decent Z97 boards for cheap, or have some CPU + mobo G3258 combo deals for $100 or less.
