Pentium D vs X2

with the new pentium D 9xx price cuts, amd will have a tougher competition.

price for price, it seems like pentium D is the better choice.

EDIT: oops, this should be moved to the CPU forum.

While the price is very tempting, which is why I tried out an 805..still can't match the performance of an X2. My 805 got a decent OC to 3.7ghz, on water cooling, but still doesn't come close to my first generation X2 on the stock heatsink @2.6ghz. I am on my second 920, and went through 5 motherboards, and still couldn't get past 3.7ghz. So unless you are gonna dish out the money for an expensive motherboard, Presler can't catch the X2. The 800mhz FSB 8xx series, need both a good motherboard and very very good cooling. The 805 since it uses the 533mhz FSB will OC decently on a less expenive motherboard, but again, requires very very good cooling, and a beefy power supply. I actualy think it's my 450w Antec thats limiting me to 3.7ghz.

I never ever thought i would see that being said. But yea, the new 9xx series with enhanced speedstep are excellent price/performance ratio cpu's. They dont run as hot as the old (and crap) 90nm cpu's and they use about the same power as an X2 when idling. Albeit they do use more under load.

I had a AMD X2 4400+, but recently switched over to a comparable system with a Pentium D 940. Overall, the Pentium D 940 system seems to perform just as well as the X2 4400+ system I had. Only difference is that the temps. are just a little higher.

I think when running at stock speeds the preslers are much more attactive option than what they once were, where i can get a 940 for the price of the 3800+ x2, when overclocking is taken into account, well lets just say give me an air cooled presler which can beat my 3800+ x2 at 2.7ghz, and i might consider switching 😛

Dont think just because something is cheaper that its better price for price.

Yes, the Pentium Ds are nice cpus, but when doing intensive things like gaming the architecture of the X2 is FAR superior.

In my opinion, the Pentium D's and X2's are IDENTICAL in price to performance ratio... The X2s cost more and perform accordingly...

So really it depends what youre doing.
