Pentium D vs Extreme Edition

From what I understand, the D965 Extreme Edition is a Presler therefore the exact same architecture is being used as any other Presler. Now...

If I overclock my D915 from 2.8GHz to 3.73GHz...

Then "essentially"...Do I have a Pentium D 965 Extreme Edition?
 
Well good...I paid $148 for my D915 when I bought it.
If I can get EE965 performance, then that is saving like $850. Simply sweet.

Not really..the extreme edition also has hyperthreading..
 
it's not quite the same, you are assuming that you are not overclocking the EE. But what if you do?

however you do get the stock performance
 
Sorta yes.

However, as mentioned, the EE has HT, & you won't be running the same FSB/RAM speeds as you would with the EE.

But close enough sure 😉
 
I changed my mind about this mobo.

I want a cheap mobo that can OC well. I'd prefer it to be under $100 though.

Wish I had a recomendation, I tried 6 differant inexpensive motherboards, and none of them were good for overclocking with pentium-d's(other than the 805, since it has a high multiplier, FSB doesn't become the limiter). Most boards got stuck around 225mhz FSB, even if they could go higher with a single core chip. Basicly, I have yet to see a cheap motherboard, that can overclock good wiht an 800mhz FSB pentium-d, all the good overclocks were on more expensive boards.

My ASRock got to 260 FSB before it died. That is 3.64GHz on my D915 (2.8GHz stock).

It crashed while I was flashing the BIOS.
Warning to all...BE CAREFUL when doing that.

the only difference between Pentium D at 3.73GHz vs Xtreme Edition 965 is the hyperthreading, so it has 4 cores on task manager, 2 virtual core per 1 actual core

but 915 at 3.73GHz has higher bandwidth, so ... i would say its about the same
 
i realised that 915 has 14multi to OC to 3.73GHz u need 266fsb which is the same as 965Xtreme edition

so no u dont have higher bandiwdth, higher fsb = higher bandwidth at the same memory ratio
 
people looking for a good Pentium D overclocking board, try out the ASUS P5ND2

my 930 presler D went to 3.7 in it, at default voltage
 
930 is much better than 920 in ocing ... 930should do around 4.2 to 4.5GHz on air.. with good aircooling and vcore increase of course

915 and 945 are even better some guy did 4.3GHz with 915 with jsut mediocre heatsink.. but for u i think 4GHz is reachable, i was able to do that with 920D oon DS3 .. but with liek 1.5vcore in bvios, prolly 1.45vcore actual.. then my 920 stop going higher after 290fsb ...'

915 = 920 with better ocing
945 = 950 with better ocing

for which board ... mmm Asus P5ND2 is pretty good, but while ur at it why not get conroe board so that when u upgrade its only gonna be a cpu drop in??

 
It depends on stepping more than anything else.

915/945 = Guaranteed C1 stepping, which is a LOT better than B in terms of thermals and O/C.
920 = Guaranteed B0 Stepping. C1 was never produced in the form of the 920.
930 = Some B0 some C1, luck of the draw.

Just kidding, yes there would be no difference. Extreme Edition CPUs are just cherry-picked and multiplier-unlocked.
 
Just to clarify:
D915 = D920 with C1 less VT
D945 = D950 with C1 less VT

Anyone have this board or know much about it...
This is what i'm planning to replace my ASRock with...
