WOW .. the price diff between the 3.0 Ghz and he EE at 3.2, is massive .. what is the spec differnece between the two, is it just Ht and the speed binning

yeah newegg probs put a premium on it becasue it will be the first batch out, and they will be a rarity for a while..

Wow, and only $458 for the cheapest CPU and mobo! (jk, I know that Newegg gouges prices)

The price difference between the 2.8 and the 3.0 is very reasonable, however the EXTREME is WAY too expensive.
 
a thousand bucks to replace my S754 board, cpu, memory and video card for a 3Ghz machine that will get destroyed in gaming by that same system...no thanks. Think I'll wait for x2 and only spend 600 or so.

Newegg usually has really good prices. But I can tell you all of those are marked up at least $50-$55.

We are due to get some Pentium D's in, and our prices are going to be:

~$278 for the 2.8 Ghz (BX80551PG2800FN)

~$348 for the 3.0 Ghz (BX80551PG3000FN)

~$585 for the 3.2 (BX80551PG3200FN)

not sure on the extreme edition yet.

i may be wrong, but i thought i saw the 820 typically crushes the 3500+ in games?

not that i'm getting one and not that its fair comparing dual vs single core....
 
I may go for a Pentium D to play with when the prices stabilize, and if ABIT releases a BIOS revision for my mobo. Also depends on how high the lower-end D's OC. (Without bringing my VapoChill to it's knees) 😉

Before anyone posts that my current mobo is not compatible, I will quote another post that I made..

I have been wondering about this.... If the pin-out is indeed different on the Pentium D / 945P and 955X, how would the 5XX and 6XX series processors be compatible? (Which they are)

EDIT: I have also read that DFI has a BIOS release for their i865PE LGA775 board that includes the following changes:

Major Reasons of Change:
1. Added C1E BIOS control.
2. Support EM64T CPU.
3. Support Dual Core CPU.
4. Enhance the support of SATA/SATAII HDDs.

It stands to reason that if DFI can release a DC compatible BIOS for the i865PE LGA775.... ABIT should be able to release one for the 925XE. I may be wrong, but only time will tell....
 
I'm about to build a system... I'm planning on an Athlon 3700+ (San Diego) chip...

I wonder how that would compare to that Pentium D 2.8 GHz... it's around the same price.
 
Fly- From what Ive seen, the San Diego will be much better for single threaded tasks, but if you do stressful multitasking, the P-D may be for you.
 
What I'm doing:

*Gaming
*C++/C# programming
*Internet
*Office apps

The MAIN question is, will the P-D be better than the A64 in GAMING? That's my main issue... everything else is secondary.

Only 775 boards with 945 or 955 chipsets. It's supposed to work with Nforce 4 sli p4 chipset, but tom was having issues with 5 boards that went bad during stress testing that all had the same chipset. So that will have to be straightened out. Your best bet is to wait until things calm down..price wise and bug wise.

I think you will find its the other way, the 3500 crushes the 820 in games....

From what I gather so far, it appears that the i875P/865 will be compatible with a BIOS flash... From VR-Zone:

One pretty interesting piece of information emerged from the R&D labs is that the 875P/865 chipsets can support Intel dual-core processors with just a BIOS flash. It has been tested and running well so far as we have learned. However, 925/915 series may poise a problem and a circuitry re-wiring on the PCB might be needed to support dual-core.
