Pentium D 840 vs. Core2Duo E4300

I just got an HTPC through work that has a Pentium D 840 in it. The motherboard will support core2duo - would it be worthwhile to get rid of the Pentium D or just keep it for now? I know the temps would be much cooler, but not sure about what kind of performance increase I would see.

I will not be overclocking. The motherboard is an Intel D975XBX.

Thanks.

its probably going to be a little faster with the e4300.

i wouldn't say its "definite" like the last poster. an e4300 is about as fast as a pentium D 950. if you arent going to overclock its probably not worth the hassle, unless you want to save electricity that badly.

you can probably still get $75 on ebay for a 840

I agree with Hans, it isn't going to be much of an upgrade, especially for the cost. An E6400 would be considerably faster, though, and doesn't cost much more.

Thanks for the input. I do want to get something that runs a little cooler, and draws less electricity. I would like to put this machine in my entertainment center (HDTV stand, open front and back). I will just wait for the rumored price drop at the end of april, maybe go with a e6400 or a 6600.

Thanks again.

Not worth the cost at the moment, unless you intend to overclock.... you'd be better off trying an undervolt of the CPU to make it run cooler/draw less energy as a short term fix.
