OK, Quick OC, and only one bench. Heres the scenario:

X2 3800+ XP90 closed case, 2550 mhz, superpi 2m -- 1m 37s. 46c

820D, Open case, Big typhoon, 3500 mhz, superpi 2m -- 2m 6 sec. 46c

Now realize I might get a higher OC (very quick OC on the 820D), but I have way better cooling with an open case, and it still is way behind my 3800+. Watch for a new thread in the next 2 days on this with more benchmarks.

Bottom line ? X2 still rules........By a LOT !!!!

Edit: and the response with 2xF@H SUCKS ! My X2 doesn't even care. The 820 acts like a pentium 100 !!!!!

Duvie, you have to come over, I need a witness !! Stay tuned...

yoyoyo, there is something definitely wrong with that SuperPi... i did two simultaneous instances using SuperPiSSE3 and i got 1m 55s... @ 2.8ghz!

nice o/c btw 😉

BTW, at the moment, both the X2 and the 820 are running single channel. I know it makes more difference to the 820, and 512 more is on the way. I don't know how much more I can keep handicapping the 820, but I am giving it every chance ! And Its too late to close the case, but the heat coming out of that puppy is intense, so I don;t dare until tomorrow. The X2's don;t care, they don't put out much heat.

Edit: Sandorski, one of my points exactly. I had to do this to not sound like a fanboy. I will keep updating with a lot more relevant info in the next few days.

The X2 3800+ is faster than the Pentium D 820. But it is no where near $100 faster. If you need to save money get the Pentium D. If you are able to afford the X2 then you would probabably be a bit better off with that.

Keep this in mind: 3 years down the road, the X2 3800+ that costs $100 more than the PD 820 will not be able to run anything that the 820 cannot.

I was more thinking about one of those $180 820 Ds off Ebay vs a X2 3800+ with a good aftermarket HSF

That'd be $180 vs maybe $400 for the X2 + aftermarket HSF, making for a differential of $220. What kind of cooling could you get for the Pentium D for $220? Water setup? I figure a 820D would have to hit 4.5 ghz to compete with the X2, maybe higher . . .

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll probably just go with a regular Athlon 64 single core since gaming is my only real intensive activity. (Any processor can handle Internet surfing and MS Office, etc.)

same can be said about say buying a sempron 64 2800+ though (which i figure is about equivalent to the pentium 820 in games)

And it looses in every multi-threaded benchmark to the 3800+. I just want to see "best OC to best OC" on my two, at what heat level. Haven't had a chance to play much yet, 20 minutes... Tonight I will know more.

well we all know that's obviously a given (the X2 3800+ even ties/bests the 840 in multi also), so just remember that if you get an 820, and you're only running single threaded apps, its only as good as a 2.8e press-hot w/ no HT.

Agreed 100% 🙂

Just to illustrate, here is what we have sold:

Pentium D 820: 0
Pentium D 830: 0
Pentium D 840: 0

Athlon X2 3800: 64
Athlon X2 4200: 7
Athlon X2 4400: 27
Athlon X2 4800: 2

It's certainly not scientific, but it says something at least 😛

rofl!

WINNAR!

Tankguys sell X2's at a 100:0 ratio....

ppl are dumping 820's on ebay like they are going out of style yet I have not found one unopened 3800+ X2 sell there for under what tankguy sells them for...

Those pretty much sum it up...horrible demand....

On the other hand I bet Dell sells bunches of them (nice rebates, discounts, etc...oh and mostly uneducated buyers) so INtel will likely claim a victory. However, reports from Taiwan Mobo makers were they have an oversupply of mobos to run these chips...Thank god reports are the new presler chips will run on them, or they may have been a coup against Intel from mobo makers.....

Interestingly enough, if you do a search for 820D on eBay, you will see a lot of complete Dell Dimension 9100 machines being sold for stupidly low prices. Their CPU? The Pentium D 820, in a Dell machine that is almost certainly 100% non-overclockable.

thats because dell had a promotion for that model with a 24 LCD widescreen for a rediculously low price. I think total package came out to a little over 1 grand. Basically u payed 200-300 for the desktop which isnt bad if u concider the X2 CPU costing that amount. :X
