Pentium D 805 vs Conroe E6600

I was wondering if people are still going to be buying the Pentium D 805 after Conroe comes out. I don't know much about the 805D but it seems to me that most people don't like the 805D for one reason or another. However, I would expect a price drop from the 805D once Conroe hits.

Can someone please tell me why no one is considering getting an 805D after Conroe hits?
Is the 805D that much more inferior to Conroe considering it will only be $90 or so? Or is there some other reason?

Also, from a price/performace perspective, would it be best to get an 805D or a Conroe considering the fact that I will be playing alot of games? Which one will give me the most bang for my buck?

Thanks.

40% ? maybe a lot more than that.......

Only reason would be somebody who is broke and wants a $50 processor (thats all it should be worth by then)

the ppl who do that are morons...They would still be better getting the cheapest Conroe and it would still wipe the floor with the 805D...not to mnetion the system will be cooler and likely quieter....

The fact is the 805D in games is slower then cpus I owned over 3 years ago...PERIOD!!! If you dont OC it and run games it is a colossal waste instead of general waste...

That is my 2 cents

Forgive me for being new to this but what you're saying is that the people who went out and bought the 805D because of the Tom's hardware article basically got screwed even though it can oc to speeds as high as 4.6 GHz?

Quite simply, the Conroe is just so much faster than the Pentium D 805 that it is a better deal than the 805 even if the 805 was around $70. If Conroe was not around the corner, a $70 Pentium D 805 would be a killer deal, however, Conroe is around the corner, so no dice.

Just4ever, he mentioned If you dont OC it and run games it is a colossal waste instead of general waste...

I don't agree with that much. Dual core CPU that can speed up multi-tasking in an office/light gaming environment for <$100 is a winner in my book. By light gaming, I mean people who like playing the occasional EA Sports title every once in a while. I know gamers who are only interested in games like FIFA 2006, NBA Live, NHL, Tiger Woods PGA Tour etc. That and the occasional Rome Total War, Age of Empires, Civilization IV etc. Those games do pretty well on $100 video cards with slight tweaks to the settings.

I'd have an 805 as a backup in case I fried my Conroe trying to overclock, but thats about it.

But what about people, like me, who want to be able to play FEAR, HL-2, Oblivion, and Prey? Should I be staying away from the 805D if that's the case?

Also, with heavy gaming in mind, what about an AMD after the price cuts? Or is even that not worth it?

First off I have neever seen anyone hit 4.6ghz who wasn't using high end chilled water or phase change cooling....That in itself is expensive...

They got screwed cause they need to spend a premium on a mobo capable of the FSB needed to even think of sniffing 4ghz...they likely needed water to do it flawlessly at another premium...

In the end a 2.6ghz A64 would equal or better it.....NOw we are hearing a conroe of same speed will be 20% faster then the A64 conservatively....If you OC that to 4ghz which you have just as a reasonable chance then the 805D (since you may be able to do it on air) you will litterally be twice as fast...A 4ghz Conroe would likely take 4.8-5ghz A64 to equal it....

yeah they got screwed....but they bent over and gave it to themselves....

The number of ppl who hit 4ghz is small...4.6ghz is ultra rare...Most even with high end air topped out before 4ghz

Yep...

Get the E6300 and a decent 965 board....

Heavy gaming wait for SLI boards to hit, but Conroe even at 6600 level will be cheaper then what AMD will drop less then comparable chips....I think a E6300 from benches I have seen will still be better then 4400+'s and probably closer to 4800+'s....So you think 4800+'s will be aroud 200 bucks?? i dont think so....

The only way to get to 4.1 (not 4.6) is watercooling, and a spendy motherboard, memory, PSU, etc... which negates the idea of saving money on the processor.

Yes, they got screwed.

Edit: didn;t see Duvie's post, We agree.

No dice on the 805. The cheapest Conroe would quite simply nuke it in EVERY scenario even when the 805 is substantially overclocked.
