Would a Pentium D 805 (2.66 GHz) be greater than or equal in performance to an AthlonXP 2600+ (2.13gHz) in single threaded apps? Would it a be a "mind blowing" upgrade for use in multithreaded apps such as dedicated 3d scene rendering?

The 805 may actually be faster in single-threaded apps, too. It WILL be WAY faster in multi-threaded apps, but it won't shine unless you overclock it.

I don't think Overclocking would really be in the picture. It would honestly be shoved into a 2U server case and used specifically for rendering Lightwave 3D frames. Thought it might be cool if I could render 2 frames in the same time it currently takes to render 1. And since the 805 is so damn cheap it's looking very tempting.

I don't know Furen, a 2.66 GHz 533 FSB Netburst chip vs a 2.13 GHz AXP...seems to me that the 2600+ would have a distinct advantage in single thread.

Just for the record the Athlon XP runs on a 266MHz FSB with only 256K L2 Cache (not a Barton core) Which may hold it back a bit.

Intel is planning, if the slides published are to be believed, a price slash on the 4th of June, when it will lower the whole-sale cost of Intel Pentium D 960 to $224, whereas the models 930, 920 and 820 will cost $178. On the 23rd of July, Intel will decrease the pricing of Intel Pentium D 960, 950, 945, 940 and 820 to $316, $224, $163, $183, $133 and $113, respectively. Meanwhile, its Pentium D 805 will cost only $93, starting from that date.
