Pentium D 2.8, watts overkill system

read the title and then the topic summary again

my brother thought his sytem would be fine with generic PSU's and has risked damaging his entire system several times. I feel sorry for him because I let him know before he ordered a Rosewill power supply that it's not going to work well.

so I guess he wants to hear people brag about how pathetic his rig is, and perhaps suggest which PSU's he should have stuck with

in the beginning I even let him know that he'd regret getting a Pentium D in the first place, but he didn't listen, some people learn the hard way...

I was like, "well I can't stop you from getting these parts, but I will suggest a very powerful PSU from Antec or Fortron, maybe Seasonic if you want something quite."

No wonder why Intels consume a lot of power. Most generic psu's are crap anyways. A good psu could probably power it. Even mine could power his. I think he has learned his lesson.

i have a pentium d 820 on a 300 watt forton atx 2.0 psu.

it doesnt draw THAT much power, you just need to make sure you get a PSU that has a good 12v rail (and all atx 2.0 ones will have at least 22 amps).

i have run the 820 with a 6800 and 300 watts which is considered puny by anandtech standards and it has been fine.

Well, my 820D is on a Forton 450 watt, one HD, and I can;t even put in a cheap pci express card or it doesn;t have enough power ! (OC'ed to 3.4 though)

Yes, he shouldn;t have got the 820, but now that he has, a seasonic 600 should suffice.

well o/cing an 820 to 3.4 ghz would raise the power output by something like 40 watts.

if he is using an older fortron 450 like a atx 1.3 revision he might not even have as many amps on 12v as a 300 watt atx 2.0 one.

so he probably should make sure his 600 watt is also atx 2.0.

p4's basically only use the 12v rail, but some of the higher wattage PSUs have really inflated 3.3 and 5v rail values to get that high wattage number so people will buy them.
