Well hello, my name be John.I am new to the forums.I love these damn things, soo helpfull!

Here goes my first post....

Ok, currently I am running a Pentium based system, wiht a P4 1.80a northwood (running stock speed), the ABIT BD7 wiht intel845e chipset motherboard, and 512mb Mushkin PC2100 DDR ram.Just want to see what you guyz/galz think of me making my switch to an AMD based system consisting of the following...AMD 2500+ Barton, SOLTEK SL-75FRN-L/75FRN2-L, nForce2, and keeping(just for a few weeks) my 512mb of Mushkin PC2100.

Im getting the new motherboard for 70 bucks, and its fully loaded, I think its a great deal, and in a few weeks I get 2 sticks of 256mb PC2700,and have it set up as dual DDR, then i think ill have one nice upgrade!

Let me know what youz think, thanx for the input. BTW the rest of my rig is as follows, and will stay as is untill the funds are available!(Im 17, and this was my first DECENT rig)(2nd rig I have built myself)(*cheers for self*).
Evga Gforce 4 ti4200 128mb
80gig WD 8mb CACHE
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz 5.1
Lite on 16x DVD-rom
Lite on 52-24-52 CD-rw
D-Link NIC PCI card for Cable Internet Broadband Connection
420w Power supply
512 mb Mushkin DDR PC2100

In terms of features, with the Soltek board you can run dual-channel DDR 400, 333 FSB, ATA 133 (although your HDD is ATA100), and you can make use of your eVGA's 8X AGP. Whether or not these features will give you better real-world performance compared to your current Intel system, .... I dunno.

You can read the review here.

Why not overclock the snot outta dat 1.8A  Anyways, if you're set on getting AMD I like your choice of the Golden Flame and Barton 2500+ if you won't/don't overclock this setup either, but unless you're certain your 2100DDR will run 2700DDR speed plan on buying the true 2700 pronto so you can run the memory at the same speed as the FSB A.KA. synchronous mode because the performance penalty for not running synch on an Nforce2 board is substantial.

BTW, if that 1.8A was from June or later last year you may be able to find some one who will trade you almost even for the Barton or at least sell it for enough to nearly cover the purchase. You should be able to get a good price for the board too so that the upgrade ends up being very inexpensive.

DAPUNISHER,
I am gonna be getting actual 3200 ram now...i fit everythig into the equation, and i sold my 1.80a for 130 with a cooler master copper heatsink and fan(heat pipe). That right there is payin off my barton at 128 on www.newegg.com. So for almost same prices im able to go to Pc3200 a 2500+ Barton and a kickass motherboard!I think things will turn out nice!!!

Cool, but you still need to run synch mode or the 400DDR is wasted as 333DDR synch will be faster ;) Plus I keep reading that 333fsb CPUs have trouble running 400fsb and you have to cut the 3rd L12 bridge to make it work so take that under consideration.

My Barton runs at 200mhz FSB no problem. Some people are blowing the 3rd L12 bridge to get beyond 200mhz. It is basically luck of the draw. Some people have no problems. I would still get PC3200, though.

OK i want a *BUMP*...
And, i need to let you guys know somthing, cuase i need some input on my next step..first, the order was placed last night (monday) and things should arive here for me around friday!(YAY)..the final order was this as follows,

Soltek-SL-75FRN2-RL
512mb of Kingston Tech. Hyper X series
2500+ AMD Baron

So, My thing is that its more efficient for me to go wiht 512 on one stick now, cuase its cheaper and later buy another 512 and take advantage of the DUAL DDR capabilities. Also i have the option of raid.As well as Serial ATA , and SATA raid.Well heres the thing, im not to far off from needing to choose another upgrade, cuase my 18th birthday is right around the corner(2 weeks to the day)..i dont get much, but im expecting $100 form parents(they already bought me other things, so i cant get greedy!)...Do i apply that 100 to another 80 gig WD w/8mb cache and set up raid, or do i buy another stick of 512 ram?....PLEASE HELP!!!...i personaly want the 80 gig, but i want to make sure i look at all my options and ,make sure its the best..so far i get out of everythig i know that raid will give me more beinifits then 1 gig of ram, i dont have the worlds best video card(nvidia Gforce 4 ti4200 128DDR), so i dont htink i have anythig demanding of that amount of ram right now.I dont need 120 gigs of memory, but raid will give me a lot of benifits liek speed and the later abilities of space( i do a lot of movie edit and high dens movie storage)(just havent hit 50 gigs on that yet)..but i thought about selling my 80 i have now and buying 2 40 gigs..well then i see that if i pay 42 more dollars ill have 80 more gigs over all..so im willing to pay 40 bucks now for 80 gigs to have int the future...im babiling, so im out now!..thanx for all the input EVERYONE

Yes get 512mg now if you plan on getting another slab in the next 3-5 months.

As far as hard drives go, get the 8mb Western Digital 80gig. Very fast and can be had for less than $100 if you try hard enough.

Out of curiosity are you a gamer at all? Because if you play the occasional game of whatever then I'd say to just overclock the Pentium 4 to hell (Though the ram will be a limiting factor) because I doubt you'll notice a huge jump from a 1.8Ghz to a 2500+ which is supposed to "simulate" a 2.5Ghz pentium 4.

Marlin1975,
I have found that drive for 84-90$, so as far as goin with that way of things, your right, 512 now and 80 gig later!

Chobits,
Yes i do play the occasional game...And i have tryed to over clock, I made 2.4.Then ran prime 95 and it failed after 5 hours,if i recall that being correct. Then stepped down to 2.2 and it ran perfectly...prime 95 went for 24 hours, and that was with me not using the computer. But I sitll got the occasional auto reboot,VERY AGRAVTING.So I gave up the over clock and figured it was probably just that I needed some faster ram!...But heck, now that I'm goin this way I'm upgrading everything,Faster RAM, faster CPU, even if it isnt by much, and a HANDSOM motherbaord.Giving me more space to upgrade later, like RAID, and 8x AGP!...

Thanx to all for helped and suggestions, and helping me see all my options, as well as giving me different ideas!
I'll posta new topic on how everythign turns out!

Xtreme~

For a comparison, I went from a Palomino 2000+XP with PC2700 (running synch at PC210 speeds, of course), to a Barton 2500+ with PC2700 (synch at PC2700) and saw a *huge* increase in gaming with my Radeon 9500 Pro on UT2K3 and related games. So I think you'll find the upgrade worthwhile (the old parts were passed along to other computers in the house, in case you are curious).

You already have a nice rig that could probably handle a bigger CPU if you wanted to upgrade it.

on the other hand, the Soltek is one nice board! It's fast too! You will surely see an increase in performance. I love mine :)

What do I think?

I think the Barton will beat the 1.8A to death.. I am much happier with my AMD rig than my P4 rig I had a week ago.

Well
Everything came in last night!!!Got it all up wiht in a few hours...new case also! i definitly notice performance increase...this things a beast..i dont think i got increase by using the SATA controler and using the converter for it on my wd hdd...but it allows me to put each drive on its own thing..and SATA is easier to wire up!..ill post some pix when i get them, had a friend take some on his new 5 mega pixel camera..they hsould turn out nice!!!...well just wnated to let you guys know this turned out to be more then i expected..
BTW im using a Volcano 9 CPU cooler..wiht manual control nob! And ill post some sysmark and 3d mark scores once i run them!!!
