so i have an 820 right now. just got a 920 on ebay ($200 only nice!)

anyway...

i was hoping the 920 would put out less heat and i am fairly certain it should , though it has more cache.

iw as hoping to know if anyone had done 820->920 and if you have any stories of temps lowering.

and to the amd people, i am not switching to amd for my main rig since i know some of you will suggest that.

i've got 2 reasons:
1. rig is btx and would be a pain to buy all new stuff.
2. i recently became an intel shareholder.

Shareholder huh, well at least that's a semi-logical reason. My dad always used to tell me "I shop at Wal-Mart because I own part of it!". Or . . . well something like that.

Anyway. here's an old(ish) Anandtech article about Presler(9xx series Pentium D) power consumption:

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2578&p=4

If you'll notice, a 3.4 ghz Presler uses less power at idle than a 2.8 ghz Smithfield(Pentium D 820). At load, it only uses a smidgeon more. The 920 is clocked lower than 3.4 ghz, so it's reasonably to conclude that a 920 will use quite a bit less power than the 820. The 920 is also a pretty good overclocker if you've got the right board for it.

ah cool thanks guy.

i've got the whole intel btx setup (so i can only overclock like 4% or something). i actually just bought my intel shares (sadly with the money gotten from selling shares in the company i actually work for). intel may not exactly be the "leader" right now, but well... their stock is pretty beaten down because of it, and well they are not going away and are still very profitable (well theyare like 8 times more profitable per share than amd at this point).

anyhow, thanks guys, i dont really intend to overclock just upgraded since my smithfield though it has been great for me (and was really cheap) i think it runs about 60C idle which seems rather high.

Ugh, yeah, those Smithfields can be real heaters. The 920 should be a significant improvement heat-wise. Good move.
