Slower than an equivalently clocked PIII. And it will make the Internet even faster than the PIII could ever dream of...

Crappy, but nessessary. a new core is required, but I have to think it could've been faster. A pentium was faster than a 486 at the same speed, a pentium pro was faster than a pentium, why can't a pentium 4 be faster than a pentium 3.?

Yeah, The internet will be super fast on these. My 56K connection will kick some bad us on that bad boy :) Might even skip cable and DSL to get one.

Ok, I'm talking thrash :)

Nah, I have a good feeling about the P4.

I disagree that next gen intel CPUs always get faster. the Pentium calssic was only faster than a 486 in some applications because of the longer pipeline. the Pentium Pro sucked at 16 bit applications.

The below is just an opinion

The Pentium 4 is going to kick ass at programs optimized for SSE2. it will probably be as fast as an equivilantly clocked PIII for many applications, and will be slower for many other applications.

Don't just make her moan, make her scream with the Pentium IV with NutBust Architecture.

Loner pipelines doesn make CPU's faster, but rather the other way around.
What they do is help to allow a CPU to run at faster clockspeeds.

LMAO ElFenix .. Ain't it true, though... All those people on Viagra would run out and get a P4 quicklike ...

Hey! Your stealing my line! :)

NetBurst ..... Pah leeeeeee ase give me a break Intel.

Don't just make her moan, make her SCREAM with the Pentium4 processor from Intel

Not only that, but it will make you look younger too! You will be more popular, and your boss will give you a raise!

Seriously, I think that the AMD Mustang and Palimino manufactured on the .15um copper process are going to slaughter the P4 in performance and clock speed.

From a technical point of view, aluminum interconnects are going to limit the P4 to speeds of around 1.4Ghz. They may well have a few processors that yield above this, but they won't have too many. The laws of physics suck ..... at least they do for Intel right now.

Additionaly, there is a little issue of Electromigration. This pheonomina causes the processor to fail completely due to corruption of the PNP transistor junction. Copper interconnects are %500 less prone to this effect. If anyone is interested, I can back up both of these assertions with links to technical papers outlining these issues.

If you think Intel had troubles in Q3 with earnings, just wait until the lucrative christmas season and Q4. It will only get worse in Q1 2001 while Intel attempts to ramp up their .13um copper process which unlike AMD is being done from scratch (AMD liscensed the proven copper process from Motorola).

The final blow will come in the form of the Hammer family introduction by AMD. With on die SMP and LDT buswork to connect any number of external processors together, Intel's plans to migrate to IA64 are doomed to fail. x86 - 64 will become the next desktop standard beyond any doubt.
