There are 2 major changes that the P4 will need:

  • Heatsink supports on the motherboard tray
  • An ATX2 power supply

It looks as though the heatsink mounting holes could be easily drilled into an existing ATX case.

It is also likely that an ATX2 power supply could simply be swapped in for the old ATX PSU.

Most new power supplies are ATX 2.03 compliant so that is not a problem, Mark. I did want to get a 300W anyway. Could you give some sites or more information about the holes in the motherboard tray for the heatsink/fan? I was going to put together a clear case from DesignComp.com, and then install the guts when it was finished. The reason I wanted to know is it would take about a month after ordering to get my case, since it will be custom. Then I could get the case tweaked and buy the new board and CPU in Dec./Jan.! Thanks for reading through this rant.

Sorry, my mistake, where I said ATX2, I really meant ATX/12V - this is a variant of the current power supplies, but with a much stronger 12 V supply and a seperate 12 V connector for the CPU.

Interestingly enough, there isn't any information in the ATX 2.03 specification about the heatsink mounting.

There is also, no information on Intel's web site about the heatsink mounting either.

Keep in mind this may all change- Intel is having problems with their chipset and delaying the release of the P4. Seems like Intel has been cutting off any upgrade paths for users, not just a new motherboard anymore but a new case, memory, PS and new mobo... add that to the cost of a P4 that they are saying won't start out much faster than the current P3's and it doesn't sound like all that great of a product to me... sorry for the rant-
