Anandtech is my favorite site to read the lastest tech news and reviews, I've been reading here for years.

To my question, I am helping a friend "fix" his computer. Its an hp pavilion: DVD burner, DVD player, pentium 4 (630) prescot 3.0ghz, 1gb ram (2 x 512), cheapo 250 watt psu, and stock motherboard with 8mb onboard video card and sound card.

The audio is having issues. It makes funny crackling noises and doesn't want to play mp3, avi or youtube files. And if it does play youtube files then there is a crackling sound louder than the actual audio.

Here is the problem with the video:

In firefox the image is fine, but the lines in the program are messed up, in IE the jpeg's just dont show at all. Windows media player does not play anthing. It freezes when you try to plan a mp3 or avi file. And there are codecs installed on the computer as well.

After removing a virus, updating driver for video and audio and later reformatting with Windows xp sp2, which didn't fix anything; I thought it was the motherboard so I replaced it with this one: http://www.newegg.com/product/...x?item=N82E16813135046

I installed it and reformatted, but no success the same problem.

I used my computer and mix part into my friends computer which I was working on. My cpu is c2d, 8800gt 640mb, gskill 1gb modules, and a $130 psu.

Well I tried my RAM in his, video card, psu and still same problem. When I put my cpu in his computer then the system doesn't boot at all, but once I put the prescott back in then it boots. Very wierd, I ran out of ideas. All you Guru's out there PLEASE HELP!

I think that it just might be the prescott cpu, which stays cool when checking it in bois.

Im gonna go try to reformat with the 8800gt in it instead of onboard, while I wait for a response.

I had a similar problem with my uncle's computer but it was on 865 chipset. If u have 2 or more partitions on a hard disk then while formatting u formatted only the one on which u have windows and not the others and ur antivirus couldnt detect the virus on other partions. Just a possibility as this one happened with my uncle and was repaired after formatting all partitions he had.

Well I made the Hard drive from 3 partitions into one, but the same problem persists.

I am now ready to tell him to buy a new computer/laptop.

Sounds totally related to video driver or video card.....

Doesn't sound like the cpu at all......

A hot prescott would just freeze the computer not corrupt video......video card or video driver issues would do many of the things you describe...

1) use driver cleaner and remove the current video drivers back to standard vga
2) reinstall motherbaord chipset drivers
3) reinstall directx drivers
4) install new video card drivers...

lastly you could check to see if video card is overheating....however why would it do firefox images fine then....I am leaning toward driver corruption
