Where I am, AMD is not an option. So I am left to decide between buying a 2.8 HT or the new 2.8 1MB Cache processor. So would you fellows recommend the latter as everyone else seems to be? My main reason for upgrading is gaming, but I also use 3d Graphics applications a lot (3ds Max etc). Reply soon or die ! :D

Both have HT.

The 2.8 with 1 mb cache is a Prescott core (2.8E). The 2.8C is a Northwood. People have been having issues with the Prescott generating a lot of heat, and generally most people will tell you to go with the Northwood. I don't have experience with the Prescotts, but from what I've read I wouldn't waste my money.

There is also a 2.8A 533Mhz bus 1Mb cache Prescott that does not have HT.

To make sure your 2.8 has HT, get one with an 800Mhz FSB.

Yes, that 533 FSB non HT CPU is a real dog.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of the 2.4A? I thought the 2.4 Prescott was the only one without HT.

Nope there is a new 2.4A Prescott and a new 2.8A Prescott. Both 1MB cache, 533 bus, and no HT.

It was really stupid of them to start using the "A" designation again. As if it weren't already confusing enough.

I guess I'll have to say to get the 2.8C with HT. The prescott is par at best, and runs a bit warmer. HT should be more beneficial, along with an 800mhz bus.

HT has really no benefit that I have ever tested in and Thugsrook has ever tested...Other then gaming and doing something else (multitasking), HT will not benefit you alone....

The cache would be better, but IMO it would be cancelled out by lowering the fsb and susequent memory bandwidth....

I don't recommend any prescott and certainly nothing below 3ghz as it hadly comparable to a same speed p4c and I have yet to see test to say otherwise. The extra pipeline hurts the performance far too much and thus this prescott needs to be ramped to much higher speeds to overcome this...IE the early years of the P4 versus the mature latter days of the P3.....

Get a P4c 2.8ghz 800fsb w/ HT....

Thanks to all of you for making some sense! ;) Its what the dealer told me that the HT is useless, but I felt it will be wiser to ask some enthusiasts. No, I do not have DVDs to rip or MP3s to make, so the only benefit I'm seeing of HT is that if it works in my 3d applications. Example: Can the renderer use two processes at the same time? or can it render using one process and I can play around in Photoshop meanwhile?

Also, since you people are so incredibly helpful, is there any preferred motherboard for 2.8c 800FSB? We also only have 400mhz DDR RAM.

alright here's the update from my vendor, in his words. The 3Ghz is 50$ pricier, and the 2.4 is 50$ cheaper (can that be an option?).l

PENTIUM 4 2.80GHZ 478PIN 800MHZ $200
PENTIUM 4 2.8E 1MB CACHE 800MHZ PRESCOTT $205
