Pentium 4 & Antec SX830?

Howdy all,

I've got a buddy who is going to build a new Pentium 4 system to be used as a business machine. Antec makes awesome cases and he was wanting to use the SX830 model for the system, but we've been hearing that the Pentium 4 requires a special case due to standoffs not being in the same posistions as normal mainboard standoffs.

Can I get some help here? Will the P4 system work in the Antec case?

The only thing it says about this case is that it will work for all ATX and Xeon boards.

But since the P4 is still a brand new devil, I'm wanting to know if this case will suffice. It seems kinda stupid that a chip/board manufacturer would fall away from an industry standard, but it wouldn't really surprise me if Intel did just that.

Anyone using a Pentium 4 system that might know whether a special case is required?
 
One thing for sure, the P4 boards need a new kind of power connector, +12v, either directly from the psu or via an adapter. Take a look at the square four pin socket to the right of the mobo plug in this pic.

My late model Enermax psu has one of these plugs, and another aux. power plug with 3.3v, 5v and gnd. as an option with the new ATX 2.03 psu spec. Also saw a post somewhere that PCP&C was selling an adapter.

P4's apparently use some kind of thru the board HSF mounting to brackets on the back of the board. Check out the four holes around the socket in the pic and the P4 HSF/brackets at 2cooltek to get an idea of how this works. OEM's like Dell could probably incorporate something into the mobo backplane, but this won't work for scratch-built as I'm sure that no two board makers will put the socket in exactly the same place.

Not Gospel, more like logical deduction, tell me if I'm wrong.

 
The Performance Series (SX series) can house a Pentium 4 (it has holes for the standoffs), but the power supply is not P4 compliant in the SX830. We're working on getting a P4 compliant case and power supply combo out soon.

In studying various cases for my next upgrade, I believe that one InWin case I checked out at their site - is specifically engineered for the P4, may be wrong, but worth a check out.

Thanks all. We knew that the PSU would not work out, but we both like the Antec cases and just wanted to know whether the board would fit all right. Glad to find that it will. 😎

I have the Antec sx840 with the 400 watt power supply.
Can that power supply handle the new P4 boards and cpu???

Pghpooh,

Check out the picture that the fourth post links to. The PSU for the P4 has some sort of square connector to the board. It's the black square that's about in the middle of the board. The PSU is made for the P4...your 400 watter won't cut it I'm afraid.
