Pentium 4 and Celeron 2.0 Ghz - Stupid question

Guys,

stupid question time. I have a motherborad which has a 1.4 Pentium 4.
I think the CPU is dead. I was going to get another 1.4 then saw that
there are Celeron 2.0 with the same 478 pin configuration. My MB book
says the board will handle Pentium 4s but no mention of celerons. What
is the difference? I remember in the good old days when celerons were
interchangable for the full Pentiums. Is that not the case anymore.

Sorry if this is a real dumb question. I have been out of tinkering
with computers for a couple of years now and the world seems to have
gone mad!!!!!

I think it's slower than my TI-83 calculator too...

Personally I think it might yield him a small performance boost. The Celeron isnt exactly a performance monster, but then his 1.4GHz P4 is a far cry from the current Northwood core.
Shouldnt be anything dramatic, but I'm guessing he'd see a small gain.

Of course this is all a mute point.
The 1.4GHz Willamette P4 is S423, whereas the Celeron 2.0GHz is S478.

The motherboard is a cheepo job called Future Power FP-SI645.

I inherreted the whole shebang from my brother. It worked fine until a few days ago then just died. It probably wasn't a stellar performer anyway

Just how slow is a celery? Really slow, even overclocked to 3GHZ it loses to an Atlon XP1800 and even XP1600.
