well i have a pentium 4 640 and my asus probe says its running at 3.2 ghz and 16x however cpu-z says its sometiems that but sometimes 2.8ghz and 14x is this some sort of speed steping?? also when i overcloked it to 3.8hz it would be reported as 3.4ghz sometimes in cpu-z

P.S. when overcloking whats better for performance 3.2ghz 200fsb x16 and ram running at 267mhz or 3.8ghz 233fsb x16 and ram running at 167mhz
thanks

Likely EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep) is enabled. Check your power profile.

For your second question, the first option would likely be faster as the P4 doesn't benefit from the extra FSB all that much.

I noticed that when I was testing a Pentium D at compusa also. It was clocked at 2.8 GHZ, when it was supposed to be a 3.0 Ghz.

It's throttling back to conserver power, etc., like AMD's Cool 'n Quiet.

You can disable that in your bios i believe...
