Pentium 4 600's are out

Newegg are now selling the new Pentium 4's with 2MB L2 Cache

They are identical to the 5xx pentium 4's except of their 2MB L2 Cache and they are all 64-bit processors.

They are dubbed with the 6xx numbering system. I wonder how they perform.

They are around $200 right now, which I find expensive.

which one is $200. The lowest priced one i see is $259. Thats way overpriced. At least i can upgrade to 64 bit if i need to.

I hope they have at least a chance of beating the AMD processors. I like AMD, but it seems boring when only one company is the leader for such a long time. I like competition. 🙂

That's just the 3.6GHz model. THe 3.0 is around $250. They are still cheaper than the P4 EE or the AMD FX though they may not outperform them.

Eh... already got a 3.0 Prescott and 2.4 Northwood in the house... they'll have to break 4GHz or come up with some stellar performance gains before I upgrade again.

Anyways, hope AMD and Intel keep each other honest.

if they are anything like their equivalent prescott brothers, they may atleast fry your eggs.

I will wait for some real benchmarks to be published before coming to any conclusions.

My guess is that the 2MB cache will only help little to increase the performance of the P4 6xx, and the 64-bit implementation is inferior to AMD64.

I don't think 64-bit is that important right now. It will take a while before all programs abandon 32-bit processors and become fully 64-bit. Then we may even see newer ones like 128-bit! 🙂

With an OC'd prescott you could toast the bread with the exhaust from the HSF

Around the same time Dual-Cored Pentium 4 has a reasonale price. Around later 2006 to 2007
