Pentium 4 540

I just built a system using a Pentium 4 540 in an Asus P5AD2-E Extreme.

Currently I have done no overclocking, everything is basically out of the box. I am using a Zalman CNPS7700-ALCU for CPU cooling.

I have been running Prime95 for about 2 hours now, and the CPU temp reading from Asus' PC Probe has been a fairly constant 59C. The fan on the Zalman is currently at max RPM (~1700).


I'm used to my 478 system which does not go over 45C ever.

So my questions are:

Is this a normal full load operating temperature?
Should I be concerned? I thought this cooler was supposed to be A #1.
If I do any overclocking, what would my limits be temperature wise?

Yes

No...you're probably getting better temps than the stock cooler under load in your setup

I don't think you'll get any warnings/issues until you hit 70c

Might want to check the rest of your setup (case fans, wiring, air flow). Tweaking the RPM's and settings for the other fans in the case can help. Sometimes the other fans throw off the airflow in the case so you may not be getting everything you can out of the zalman.

Prescotts just run hot. Beats a space heater!

I have 2 12cm fans and 1 9cm in a Thermaltake Tsunami case.

I was just uncomfortable with the temperatures compared to my 2.8 478 Northwood, thought I should be shooting for something lower.
