I got a box in my workshop for repair today, has a Pent 4 520 with HT and a x300 AMD gpu in it.

I decided for sh!ts and giggles I'd toss in a water cooled GTX 470 and see what it could do in todays low end games.

I'm not really sure what this processor can actually handle, I tried League of Legends and it was unplayable, lol... lol isn't what I'd call an intense game, so I'm really at a loss as to what else I could actually try.

I think I'll run 3DMark06 and call it a day on this dinosaur.

There must be some other problem with the system. A p4 520 should be able to handle LoL, considering my single core 1.3GHz conroe can handle it. With the graphics settings on low it gives decent frame rates. It just looks like warcraft 3.

I've also run LoL on a P4 2.8 (first gen prescott) with a radeon 4550 and was able to play at almost high settings.

Are any of the settings CPU intensive, like shadows are in WoW?

My 2.1GHz Core2Duo laptop can run it as well.

The problems occurred in team fights, it would slow down almost to a crawl for a second then go again, outside of team fights I'd get just shy of 30 fps (max settings), but once team fights started it would chug into the low teens.

Is it possible HT is a problem?

Edit: Could also be Fermi is the problem, they seem clock cycle hungry.

Did you check to see if its hitting the thermal throttle limit?

I like when people take old junk and try new stuff with it

LoL is easy to run but this chip is like 8 years old and LoL may not be the most efficient game. Maybe the lack of SSSE3 or SSE4?

Try Half Life 2 or Left 4 Dead, those source games should still run decent on a P4. Or take and see what unreal tournament 2004 can do, I really can't think of much that would run well on a P4.

I think they pushed out engine updates to older Source games, so they will probably run badly, unless they didn't roll out updates to all older games.

I put the x300 in and overclocked it a bit using ATI tool, the result was obviously I needed to reduce the resolution from 1080p to 13xx/7xx and reduce the settings from max to lowest with no shadows.

However I was able to maintain between 13-22 fps with an avg of 20 during a game against bots. Not sure how it would play out on Dominion, but either way the real point was the cpu was running at 76-85% usage the entire time

when it came out the x300 could hardly even play new games on lowest settings, forget todays games
