Depends on how much they charge for shipping, but that does look like a better deal. The only advantage to the LGA775 chip would be you could upgrade to a PCIe motherboard later if you wanted, and keep the same chip.

Thanks stevty2889, that sounds like good advice. And, piromaneak, I did look at AMD too, but I understand that the P4 is better at high CPU usage mult-tasking and the AMD is better at games. Don't want to start a flame war!

neither, a64 3000+ outperforms both and cost about half as much, but if you wanna drop $1000 for a CPU, get an AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 (socket 939)

High CPU usage? I use a Preshott 3 Ghz and don't see any advantage at "high CPU usage multi-tasking". Frankly, HT is a gimmick. You'd get a far better value building an AMD64 system right now, regardless of what you are doing with your PC.

Agreed with the other posters on the Socket 478 Northwood P4. Much better choice than a Socket 775 P4 3.0.

I think there are some 775 boards that still use 865 and 875 chipsets; correct me if I'm wrong...

If the P4 doesn't really multitask much better than an A64 for usage (I'm not sure; you can try out rigs with both processors, if possible, or rely on others' findings), go AMD.

Go for the 478 (easier to cool, cheaper memory, etc), but you're gambling on whether the board is any good since the outpost.com page doesn't really give you specifics. If you're just looking for best performance vs price shop some AMD deals.

The 600-series LGA775 chips are supposed to be pretty decent if you are going the P4 route. More cache, less heat, 64-bit capability.

I ended up ordering an AMD 64 3400+ Newcastle with a DFI Lan Party m/board, instead of the Pentium 4 3.2. Thanks for everybody's help.
