Pentium 4 2.8c's Overclock

I saw someone mention "happy OC's" for certian Althon chips, and I wanted to know if anyone had a similar idea for 2.8c chips, on air cooling. It would also be great if anyone with experience OC'ing these chips could post their info, like the FSB and voltages, cuz I'm curious like that

i have no experience with the chip, but did alot of searching about it. i would assume that if you had a good mobo, and knew your stuff, that 3.4 wouldn't be a problem for you. 2.8 northy is gonna go down in overclocking history.

I have a 3.2C running at 3.6 right now. 1.6V, 225 FSB (900MHz). I wouldn't be surprised if you got 3.4 out of it.

Northy? Northwood? How do you check that? And I have a great mobo, DFI's Lan Party 875 Pro. I think it broke or got close to some oc'ing "record" on Anandtech, which is why I bought it. Perhaps I should check to make sure before I post this . . . Ah hah, here it is.. Now all I need is to figure out what I'm doing, and I'm set ^_^

All of the "C" series chips are Northwood cores. They're preferred over the "E" series Prescott cores because they run cooler and are a bit faster at the same clock speed.

2.8C usually overclocks to 3.4~3.5 range. They can go higher though, but that is about the average. You preferrably want a M0 stepping. I would recommend getting memory that will run at around DDR500 speed.

Thanks for that, I posted a thread earlier asking what RAM I should aim for, since I am upgrading it before I do the overclock. I decided on some Crucial Ballistix PC3200 that can hold tight timings up to the DDR466-500 range.

That or Samsung TCCD is the best possible RAM you can get right now, and the Ballistix holds 2-2-2 timings at a higher clockspeed. Good choice!

PQI Turbo memory is very good memory for your buck. PQI4000-1024DBL I believe uses TCCD, should run up to 280 and hit 2-2-2-5 at 200:thumbsup:

With decent cooling 3.4-3.5 should be easy. I have my 2.8e at 3.5ghz.

I'm running a dfi lanparty as well and it may be my lack of overclocking experience but my mobo seems to be very particular with memory. With my 2.4C and various memory (xms3200c2pro, nitropc3500, ballistix3200, kvr3200w/hynix btd-43chips) I could only run 1:1 ratio up to around 220fsb. Highest fsb I got was around 272 with the ballistix but had to use 3:2 ratio.

I recently upgraded to a 3.0C 30 capper (but also have a 2.8C 30 capper to try as well) and am just starting to find the limits with that (so far 1:1 up to 218fsb will start trying 5:4 ratio soon).

My experience with several 2.8C on air: (agp/pci at fixed 66/33 using 865PE and 875 at 1:1 ratio)

240 FSB stable with dimm and core at stock voltage (D1 and M0)

245 FSB stable with dimm at least 2.65v @SPD and vcore at least 1.6v (D1)

250 FSB stable with dimm at least 2.7v @SPD and vcore at least 1.62 (D1), (1.52 stock with M0)

260-270 FSB stable with dimms at least 2.8V @SPD using PC4000 (2.5-7-4-4) and vcore at 1.65V (D1 and M0)

I have my 2.8C overclocked to a 250FSB (in perfect sync with memory). Anything higher than that and I risk stability issues (max overclock is about 3.6GHZ). I have the core running at default Voltage and memory at the voltage required by corsair (2.8V).

I think the 2.4c will go donw in history as many 2.4c D1 and M0 stepping were hitting 3.5 to 3.6ghz on air for quite awhile...

The other chip is the 1.6a...

usually it will be the lower model chip of each line as they tend to get the extreme clocks as most of them top out at similar levels
