They sell it for 400 bucks? For this price you get something better I guess...
(Look at the Athlon 1G in the pic for about 100...) 😉
 
I wonder if Transmeta's 512 of level 2 on the crusoe had anything to do with it? If it did, then great, Intel needed a kick in the arse to up the cache on their processors.
 
I guess it depends on what you mean by cost. R&D, definitely. Materials? Well yeah, it would take up more space on the wafer, so that's less real estate for other cpu's.
 
R&D is Research and Development. The actual materials that go into a cpu aren't a whole lot.

But they don't exactly design and manufacture themselves.
