I've got one machine with an Asus P3B-F and Pentium III 550 (512K L2 cache) and one with an Asus P2B with a Celeron 400. The Celeron is the wife's machine but I use it some. The 400 seems kind of pokey and I'd like a faster CPU for my machine but I don't really want to get another mainboard at this point. I'm thinking of popping a Pentium 3 830 in the P3B-F and I'll just sell the 400 and I'll give the wife my 550.
So, question is, will a Pentium 3 850 SECC work okay in the older P3B-F? I can get a boxed retail 850 for around $200. I have the original BIOS on my P3B-F. It doesn't seem like I should really need a BIOS upgrade but maybe I'm wrong. If I do need a BIOS upgrade, would I be better off just getting an 800 or something that would work without flashing? I'm assuming the SECC is a Slot1 like I need. And finally, is the 256K a full speed cache? How does this compare to the 512K half-speed cache in older P3s?
...Thanks for any help. I haven't kept up on hardware too well in the last year...
