Pentium 200 Cruncher

I've got an old Pentium 200 running Gentoo (now THAT was fun compiling), and I was wondering if Folding@Home is too much for it. Its been running almost 2 days straight and its still at 1%. Should this be? Top shows that its using ~97% of the CPU. If F@H is too much, I guess I'll go back to making it SETI cruncher.

On another note, would the same hold true for a Pentium 266 Laptop?
 
unfortunaly the F@H work units have deadlines on them. i think the slowest you could run F@H on is a p2 250 and thats if it is folding 24/7.
 
Yeah, it does take a long time on SETI, but at least I feel it is doing SOMETHING, instead of having a computer on for a few days straight and still be at 1%. I think he meant PII 266. 🙂
 
You can set it for G@H WUs (Genome@Home) that do not have deadlines and take less time to process, if you are interested in doing a medical project. To select G@H WUs, reconfigure the F@H client with the -config option, and after selecting Advanced Options, you will be given a choice of which WU to prefer: choose "gah". 🙂
 
Slowest I ever ran SETI on was a PII 300mhz....that was on 24/7 as a fileserver and it took almost a day per WU.
 
PIII 600 takes an average of 10hrs 40 mins per WU so a 200 might take as much as 33hrs? Probably not a very accurate conversion, but hey 🙂

i do realise there are no p2 250's. the way deadlines are worked out for F@H is on a celery 500 running around 1/3 of the time, which i would say would be inbetween a p2 233 and p2 250 if there where such a thing. 😉 none the less thanks for pointing that out Assim
 
Mind you ,seeing as PII 233s are not multiplier locked (you can set a lower than def multiplier) you could set 1 to 2.5x100🙂

Would be a bit more than that ,I once had a Pentium 166MMX @ 188MHz with SDRAM & that did WUs in about 39-40hrs.The same rig with a Pentium 233MMX@266MHz did WUs in about 30.5hrs🙂
 
Not to discourage you, but won't the electricity cost $30/mo or so? Maybe it would be best overall to save up for 400 to 600 MHz machine for a couple months and double or triple your output over the next year. Such machines tend to be $100+ locally (Atlanta).

Maybe "utilities included" ?

Yeah, $30 a month for a 200 watt or less PSU? Per month?
EDIT: Geez, that's alot. I don't think it costs nearly that.
 
Most PCs will only draw about 100-150w ,excluding monitor & dual cpu rigs.

Here in the UK it works out to about £6/mth/PC running 24/7

same here😛

I feel a little bad for "waisting" electricity during the summer, but during the winter it has a direct effect on our heating costs, the electricity is acctualy cheaper per BTU than Diesel.
