Hey all, i bought a pentium II 350 and its not like other processors, my friend thought it looked more like a graphics card than a processor. Weird slot 1 design, anyways i just wanted to know how robust this thing is? where on it should i not touch without earthing myself? ive already been earthing myself before i do anything to it but considering that its a big plastic box it looks safe, oh and is it ok to touch the attached heatsink without earthing?

It actually seems like quite neat little package, fan heatsink and processor all in the one thing, easily slotted in somwhere :D

What do you mean by robust? I have a Pentium 2 366 MHz laptop and it does just fine for browsing the internet, listening to MP3's streaming over my network, e-mail, typing documents. I can also run a NES emulator on it which is kinda fun sometimes =) I even do some minor photo editing on it... just adjusting levels, cropping, resizing, stuff like that.

I mean is it ok to handle it without earthing myself basically. As its in its neat little plastc case, and is it ok to touch the heatsink without earthing? (ive not broken it or touched it much yet)

Touch it all over like your girlfriend, it should be fine. I've touched just about every part of my 1.6 GHz Duron and it can still tick at 2.4 GHz.

As already said computer parts are pretty tough. I do ground my self before reaching into my case but I don't have a static strap or anything. I am sure your CPU is fine and will be fine the slot CPU's I think are pretty tough.

my uncle found one of those slot 1 P2's in the trash at a job site along with an 800mb hard drive, a 4x cdrom, some cables, and an old sb 16 sound card :)

not nearly as valuable as they once were, but could still run your word processing and e-mails if it had to.

The little copper contacts that enters into the slot are the only dangerous places for the processor.
I still like more the slot A based early Athlons - they looked really beautiful, much more so than the Intel processors

I once carried an edo dimm for a couple weeks in my pocket, rinsed it off, played hockey with it a little, rinsed it off dried it stuck it in a computer worked fine.

definately, they give you all the grounding mumbo jumbo to scare you off from doing things on your own and saving yourself some money as well as the saving the company's money as well if you screw up their parts and claim you didn't know you could damage them if you tamper with them on your own

Ok so i shouldnt do what craig does with his hardware, but i dont need to wear rubber gloves and earth* or ground myself everytime i touch it :D w00t

*we got taught that its "earthing", the teacher kept "earthing" herself by touching the plastic floor and tables n stuff and she said its always good to "earth" yourself every now and then. Maybe she was on drugs or somthing, who knows :p
