I'm trying to get a really nice camera for around 400$

I'm eyeing two right now.

Panasonic fz8

Advantage - gorgeous leica lens and zoom, RAW

Disadvantage - dynamic range is limited by small sensor, highlight clipping, noise at higher ISO's, short warranty (6 months on ccd for example)

Pentax K110d
Advantage: Very Cheap SLR, RAW, dynamic range, standard warranty

Disadvantges: I will be stuck with the kit lens for quite a while as money is tight. . .

Which would you get?

I'd save just a bit more and get the K100D. IIRC Pentax is in the process of scrapping the K110D in favor of the K100D. Same lens kit comes w/ it as the K110D, but the K100D offers image stabilization.

I don't really need image stabilization for what I do. . . I just look at it as another electromechanical part that could fail...

Then go with the K110D for sure. Even if they remove it from their product line, you will still be able to use the latest and greatest Pentax lenses to ones dating back 40 years.

Also, you can pick up a couple of nices lenses for the Pentax for less than $100 each (take a look @ the Tamron LD 70-300mm, and the Pentax 50mm/1.4). So you wouldn't be breaking the bank that badly.
