These are great cameras! I have had a Pentax ist DL for about 18 months and it exceeded my expectations...by a wide margin. The only downside right now is that Pentax lenses are in short supply, probably the result of the resurgence in interest in Pentax dslrs. I just ordered the K10D which has 10mp and other features. It is $509 AR.

If you follow the buzz in the industry, Pentax is supposed to announce two new cameras at the end of January so it appears that existing stock is being cleared out. If you are using a p&s and have been interested in moving to a dslr, this is your ticket. Even though these have 6mp sensor, there is a world of difference in image quality from a dslr compared to most p&s due to the larger physical size of the sensor on the dslr.

Highly recommended.

I have the old one as well, the standard K100D and love it, kinda wish I held out for this as it supports the faster motor assisted lenses but would have missed out on alot of shots in the meantime.

that and i believe the only USM lens are the DA*, which are about 3X the cost of the body.

I don't think you are missing out on much today. The only significant feature was support for the SDM lenses but there are only two available, both DA* and are rather pricey....kind of a mismatch for this camera body. On the other hand, lenses are everything...camera bodies are the real accessories.

Great deal, I had the K100D for a while and loved it for the price, only thing I have a complaint about was the buffer, focus time in low light, and it was a little loud for my taste. Not sure if the K100D super improves any of those or not, but for that price you cant go wrong!

Is this a better deal if I don't have Pentax lenses already?

Kit with Lens for $579 - $100

IMO, the deal is to buy the camera body only. The kit lens is good (I have one, came with the Pentax ist DL I bought in 7/2006) but you should be able to easily pick one up for $80 or less off ebay. Also, I just checked Adorama (another good online store) and they have the kit lens (18-55mm) for $85 + s&h.

Makes me wonder if there is a shortage of the kit lens or Pentax over produced bodies? Whatever, because previously the kit only added $50 - $70 to the price of the camera body which made it a no brainer. OTOH, Buydig (and Beach Camera...one and the same) are offering the lowest prices on Pentax bodies so there may be some special pricing involved here.

If you have some extra $$, I would buy the Sigma 17-70 for around $350, better quality and more versatile than the kit. Also, Pentax makes a 16-45 which can be found $350ish. Still, the kit lens is no slouch...just less attractive for the $150 difference.

I guess what I'm saying is that the $150 opens up a lot of other possibilities that I would consider more attractive than the 18-55 kit. Also, you can get if for significantly less if you are willing to shop a little.

BTW, my K10D just arrived today. I ordered through Beach Camera last Friday and rec'd today. Standard ground shipping.

Let me repeat again...the K100D Super is an excellent camera at a great price. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Kit lens from Adorama

Adorama also has used lenses as well. If you want to go really cheap ($20-30)but still get an excellent lens...look for some of the old manual focus 50mm lenses. Even the f2.0 are very good. There are reportedly over 28,000,000 lens in some form of K-mount which will work with this camera...just varying degrees of automation.

This is an incredible camera. A great second lens would be a Sigma DG APO 75-300 from amazon for 220. The kit lens is surprisingly more than adequate for learning the ways of SLR.

Thats a damn good deal. In terms of image quality its about 99% as good as $1000 DSLRs. Its only missing a small few specialized features only the real expensive ones have. If you don't know what those features are, you won't need them anyways. Also pentax lenses are generally cheaper than Nikon/Canons so you can get a decent collection if you look at the pentax forums.

Off-hand, could anyone tell me if this Pentax has auto-exposure bracketing? Mirror lock-up?

Yes and yes. Three exposures for auto bracket and the mirror lock up is 2 sec so far in my uses.

i think it has mirror lockup, the k10d has auto exposure (and white balance, contract etc) bracking, not sure if k100d has that

complete noob question. what are these two features, and why are they significant?

Mirror lockup is exactly what it says. The camera locks the mirror up, clearing the light path to the sensor (or film), usually 2-3 seconds, prior to taking the exposure. Generally used when mounting on a tripod and using the camera timer for delayed exposure. It is used when maximum resolution is important or difficult to achieve, for example macro photography. It helps eliminate any vibration within the camera associated with normal mirror slap or pressing the shutter release when taking a picture. If you think about how an SLR works, there is a mirror below the viewfinder, in front of the sensor or film, that has to swing up and out of the way when the shutter is released. By using mirror lockup in conjunction with the timer, the camera should be rock steady when the shutter finally trips.

Auto bracketing is a feature where the camera will automatically take multiple exposures, usually three, shooting one image using what ever exposure settings the user or program believes is correct and then shooting again, underexposing and overexposing by whatever parameter the user has set (1/2 stop, full stop, etc.). The reason behind doing this is to try to ensure that you have at least one image that is properly exposed. This is especially desirable on digital cameras because they have far less exposure latitude than film. With film, you could over / under expose by over a full stop and still get a decent picture whereas even a half stop off becomes noticeable with digital. You can do some tricks within post processing (i.e., Photoshop) to save an image or create other effects but you prefer to start off with something close to exposure you want.
