Although DARPA has accomplished a lot (M-16, UCAV, Predator, Saturn rockets, GPS, stealth technology . . .) someone would have to explain this to me. A lot. It is typical DARPA though. Put out a request for some crazy sh!t and see what happens.

DARPA = Internet

However, the person who came up with this idea should be fired for being a total ass.

Ok, that's just a wee bit wierd, not to mention a wee bit stupid. Do future market analysts know something about terrorism that the CIA/FBI/NSA don't? Also of note, it's a Poindexter project.:Q

In its statement Monday, DARPA said that markets offer efficient, effective and timely methods for collecting "dispersed and even hidden information.

Talk about thinking "out of the box".

Wow.

Capitalism Gone Wild!

The Market is a Mysterious force, perhaps it can be used to predict the future!

Futures contracts can be a compelling indicator, depending upon the issue. Plus, they have contracted with "the Economist Intelligence Unit, the business information arm of the publisher of The Economist magazine".

Gruesome as hell, but intriguing.

Intriguing sure, but without some Insider Trading(perhaps Osama should be invited to get in on the action) how is tis going to help foetell Political events? Seems to open up some avenues for manipulation, which is even more intriguing, list some events you'd like to see happen and maybe "Investors" will make them happen for you.

Seriously, we should be thankful for stupidity like this. If it wasn't for such dumbass decisions like these, people might not realize the sheer ignorance and the true intentions of those in power. So lets be thankful for this piece of total garbage. :D

I believe Dr. John Craven actually successfully applied a similar concept in the recovery of the USS Scorpion. I forgot where I read it but I believe he had submariners place bets on where the Scorpion went down. Their "prediction" was contradictory with the Navy's assesment but guess what, that's where they found the sunken sub. The concept works by leveraging the collective experience/expertise of a group.

I imagine that it only works if the group had relevant expertise to begin with.

I thought about the concept last night.

As you indicated in the other thread, there was indeed the potential for manipulation and collusion on behalf of potential terrorists themselves. The concept may work to a certain degree had it not become public knowledge that the Pentagon is the sponsor. One of the keys to success would have been involvement in the process by investors from that particular region. A "feel for the street" is probably anticipated by project creators.

At any rate, the most intriguing - and to a certain degree, amusing - piece of the project I found is that the "bets" directly point fingers before occurrence of actual events. Hell of a message contained therein.

I was told today from an economist that this was not a joke and it has so far cost the taxpayers 750 million dollars. I am trying to substantiate the claim, but for sure this was not a joke. The damn government is run by ignorant dumbasses.

Vote democrat in 2004 and clean house (and senate).
