WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon has accepted a multibillion-dollar compromise with key senators to acquire 100 Boeing Co. jetliners for use as modified refueling planes by leasing 20 and buying the rest.

If approved by Congress, the deal would let the Air Force start phasing out aging KC-135 tankers as part of what would be the first lease, rather than purchase, of a major weapons system -- a project in the works for two years.
