Penryn up and running!

Yeah AMD is in trouble for the next while, at least in the high end market anyway...

WTF does this have to do with USA 😕

If 65nm has been financially feasible to build quad cores then heres to hoping they will have an octocore soon.....I can use it....

read this article this morning. sounds like intel is on track for 45nm for Q3. this could mean they will soon be able to glue 2xquad into a octacore monster.

I believe he was talking about this article.

Development for 45nm processors is currently done at Intel's D1D facility in Oregon.
😉

It could also be an oblique reference to an unintentionally hilarious scene in Bloodsport when the Kumite registrar guy gives this hammy thumbs-up to Van Damme and says 'O K USA in a ridiculous accent 🙂

er...
theres nothing new there, theyve been speaking about Penryn since... November? early December?
45nm is gonna be sweet though.

LOL you got that right!

Talking about something vs getting something to work in real life are two totally different things.

native quad cores and perhaps non-native octacores....

Very far down the line unfortunately, Yorkfield looks to be 2 Wolfdale Dual Core's in MCM and Intel's first Native Quad Core won't be until Nahelem derivatives in H2 2008. It is also extremely doubtful Intel will release Native Quad Core and Non Native Octo Core at the same time, so if we even see Octo Core processors on a single socket it will most likely be sometime in Early to Mid 2009.

With that distance in time, then it is not likely going to be done on the 45nm process, huh?

I didn't think there were going to have another non-native quad version in there.

Well considering how high clocked each die can be with a MCM approach, native is not the be all and end all of things. It will still have a total die of 200mm2 or so, so a MCM approach could help yields out, like it did for Presler.

You got to keep in mind the 32nm process will only be in it's infancy, in H2 2009 even further down the road.

I am not too hyped about Octo Core at this point, I feel 4 is a very comfortable level, unless software really get in gear and starts heavily taking advantage of as many cores as possible, and not just the stuff we have now

Yeah but I fold so 8 instances is fine with me. I can run as much as it gives me.....There are no apps I run now that can hold 100% on all four of my QX6700 cores....Too IO limited at this point. 8 cores will only exasperate that.

Well, just build yourself two kentsfield boxes then. That is of course unless you already have a few dozen of them.. 😉

I have read here from a few that Intel penryn is a simple die shrink it is much more than that.

1). It will employ High K and metal gates.
http://online.wsj.com/preview_login.htm...656.html%3Fmod%3Dyahoo_hs%26ru%3Dyahoo
2). It will also use H/T but not the old p4 H/T this one is the mitosis brand of Hyper threading. With a greatly improved compiler.

3) Removed point 3 as I just learned Yorkfield will be dual die.
