Pendrives and ReadyBoost

I will buy new pendrives, but I would really like to learn what I am doing wrong.

As some of you already know, my computer is currently being repaired. In the meantime, I use a very cheap laptop with 4 Gb of RAM. It works fine. I use pendrives (one pendrive at a time) for ReadyBoost, to increase the memory-power. It works very well. But, occasionally, the pendrives behave oddly.

For example, in Windows Explore>>>>This Pc, the icon shows that the pendrive is almost completely full. Which is weird. I know for sure that ReadyBoost had taken only half of the pendrive's space. I have nothing else on the pendrive.

Also, the thick line that shows how empty/full the pendrive is, is red—instead of the usual blue. I guess the colour red indicates some sort of problem with the pendrive.

To sort the problem, I tried various methods. Without success.

If I try to format the pendrive, it tells me:

“This drive is in use. Another program or process is using this drive. Do you want to format it anyway??”

I click on “Yes” but I get nowhere, because it says:

“Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or any other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.”

Despite all my efforts, I cannot find any disk utility, or program, using the drive.

Just to see what happens, I then right-click the pendrive, I click on “Open”, and I see the pendrive's ReadyBoost File. If I try to delete the ReadyBoost File, it says

“This action cannot be completed because the file is open in System. Close the file and try again.”

I have no idea where, in “System”, the file is actually located. I tried and tried, but I'm not able to find it.

So, I close the file, I try again to delete the ReadyBoost File, without success.

Sometimes, when I insert the pendrive, I get the option “Do you want to scan and fix the removable disk??”

I click on “Scan & Fix (Recommended)”

Then, when I click on “Repair Drive” the computer says

“Windows cannot repair the drive while it's in use.”

In use where??

As I wrote above, I will buy new pendrives, but I would really like to know what I am doing wrong.

Nice reply above ^^.

The red line shows the drive is almost full, greater than 90% full. This is expected since (I believe) ReadyBoost is designed to use the whole USB drive.

I think you must disable ReadyBoost first before Windows will allow you to reformat the flash drive.

Hi, My name is Alex

The problem is that in win7 the Readyshare program is running all the time. So to disable Readyshare goto Start menu, computer, Right click the drive, Properties, Readyshare, Then uncheck The box that enables Readyshare. You would have done the same thing to enable Readyshare on the Drive.

Hope this solves your problem, If you have any questons email me at pnggameing@gmail.com.

I had followed all your helpful suggestions. After hours and hours of attempts, I gave up. Then, I don't know how, ReadyBoost “unblocked” itself. So I was able to format those pendrives. I wish I knew what actually unblocked ReadyBoost. Everything seems to be working fine, so far. Thank you very much guys, for your help.
