Pencil trick no longer works with newer AMD cpu's?

for athlon xp (palomino and tbred) no it doesnt as amd cut gaps in between the bridges, and should you get any conductive material in them, it grounds the connection out

but for the tbreds, the L1 bridges are connected to begin with, but different multiplier sets are unlocked for different processors (either 13x and higher, or lower then 13x)...also it depends on mobo, some can unlock all multiplier sets without modding anything for tbreds

So how are these unlocked? Specifically AMD XP 1700+

Is it unlockabled to overclock and if so how.

AMD is starting to piss me off!

Not with the Tbred ,only the Palominos have the gaps.

Why should AMD piss you off?

Their chips are NOT permanently locked like Intels are & also AMD don't have a duty to provide unlocked chips!

Anyway ,all Tbred CPUs are unlocked , Tbreds go from 1700 upwards ,(though apparently there are some 1600s in theory).Palominos go from 1500 to 2100.And yes they overlap you need to check out the cpu numbers to see which one you have or download WCPUID.

So how are these unlocked? Specifically AMD XP 1700+

If Tbred you don't have to do anything aside from choose the multiplier you want.
If palomino I suggest you read the unlocking guide at Anandtech.
As a quick explanation ,what you need to do is to fill the gaps between the L1 bridges vwith an insulating material ,Silicon sealant is best & then you join the L1 bridges.

Which cpu do you have?

hehehe, intel just patented a new method of not allowing overclocking while AMD's new class of chips are all factory unlocked and you are pissed off at AMD? get your head together dude--intel is shafting the average enthusiast by not allowing multiplier or FSB changed and AMD encourages both.

yeah i nkow, had you read the rest of my post you would have seen i did talk about that 😉

fill the pits with something like whiteout and paint over with tracepen or rear window defogger repair kit
that only applies to palomino cores

for tbred cores, dont do anything 🙂

I thought I'd better point out that 1st line😉

😱

see what happens when you start to type....get distracted, then start typing again 😉

Hmm ... I've got a Palomino XP2100+ that I'd like to unlock. Silicone sealant works? I dunno about penciling over that though ... I'd probably need some conductive paste.

Yeah use conductive paint ,not pencil or silver grease.

Re the Silicon ,it works fine & is far easier to remove than superglue if you mess up & its more heat resistant than say ,crayon!.
1 thing though you need to do is let the Silicon set for 24hrs before painting over it.

To applie the silicon just stick a blob in the middle of the L1 bridges & smear it over with your finger until you can see that all the gaps are well filled (use a magnifying glass) ,then gently wipe over with tissue to remove the excess sealant. After 24hrs get a pin & gently scratch the L1 dots to remove any sealant thats strayed ,you should see the dots sparkle bright gold when you do this. Then you just join the L1 bridges with the paint🙂
