pencil trick---- and kt7 heat sensor--read-- this could help others

I have a duron 600 from buy.com running at 850. It is a week 29 retail. actually I have two of them. They will not boot at 900mhz. More than one person has said it would be wise to go back and re pencil the cpu. Can anyone confirm that this sometimes helps? I have the mutliplier unlocked So I do not see what good it would do. Also, I never get over 45C. Could it be that the cpu sensor on my kt7 is not touching the motherboard? This does not seem real hot for this type of chip but the chip does not like to go this high. thanks

Try a different pencil? or maybe try the automotive rear defroster repair kit?

UPDATE: I kind of assumed that you were not getting the other multiplier settings with your unlocked CPU. The easiest way to answer your question is: what type of cooling fan are you using? If its a coolermaster you should definately consider a PAL6035 for better results.

I have a lot of experience with this and re-penciling the cpu's L1 bridges definately can fix a lot of problems with changing the multiplier. The best way to check if you have a problem is to start with your default cpu multiplier (6 in your case) and try going up one by one (ie, 6.5, 7, 7.5, etc). If you did not pencil correctly, you will get random multipliers at boot. For example, if you set it to 7.5x100 you will end up getting 6.5x100 or similar. If a chip is correctly modded you should be able to go through each setting and probably get 9x100.

BTW, feel free to use a regular rubber eraser as it causes no damage. Make sure that no pencil marks overlap as that is the number one problem.

Thanks for the reply. I will check the check the multiplier settings. I will also pull the cpu and check the tempature sensor. It may be too low. I guess while I am at it. I could pile on some more pencil too. I do have an alpha pal 6035 and a antec 300 watt power supply. I also have mushkin pc 133 222 ram.

Does the type of pencil make a difference? I mean should I erase what I have and go back and redo it? What happens if you cross the bridges? Could that be my problem?
