Pen plotters and Ubuntu?

I'm hoping to convert a pen plotter to a vinyl cutter (a very simple mechanical modification), and was wondering if anyone here knew how on earth I might actually use it. I have a little experience using Roland's STIKA cutters under Windows, and that's about it. Any suggestions for how I might go about this?

my dad has a roland VP-540 or some such with a vinyl cutter...but i dont know jack about it, except that he uses rolands sofware for printmanagement and does it all under windows :-/

the guys we bought it from do digital art and such, and can create the images used for the cutouts, but they said its a bitch to do and can take some time *shrug*

are you using a roland printer? and what exactly do you need to be able to do? if you can be a bit more specific ill fire off an email to one of the guys we bought the printing stuff from and see if he can tell me anything.
